BFBC2 friends list not working?

I can't get my friends list working. Neither can two of my friends. At all. No adding, no invites received, nada. Any clues? Can't find much from google yet.
 
It was broken at the start (and wiped several times), as I remember, but I was able to add someone to my friends list just the other week.
 
It works you just have to be both online inorder for it to work and online at the same time to accept
 
Its never worked for me since launch

Steam friends took 5 years to actual work I can wait for BF3.
 
The system has been broken and terrible since launch. I wish they would have just made it possible to link it into Steam no matter where you buy it from.
