Hello everyone, this is rot112. This is my first real post on here and unfortunately it's about an issue with my computer when playing Battlefield 3.

I currently have :
Core i7 2600k at 4.5GHZ
Asus p8p67 PRO Rev 3.1
8gb Corsair Vengeance Ram
SLI EVGA GTX570HD
GX850W Corsair PSU

I have allowed FURmark to run for 5 minutes and my GPUs hit about 83C. Though when I am playing BF3 it only reaches about 73C at MAX.

My CPU has a ThermalTake FRIO, so it only reaches about 38C at the absolute MAX when playing BF3.

When I get home after work I will run Prime 95 and stress my CPU. Then memtest. Thought I doubt it's my system since I can run all other games just fine.

I also have a 200mm fan blowing cool air straight into my system as well. So heat is not the issue. And after running FurMark burntest for 5 minutes I dont think it's my PSU either.

Again the issue is that the computer just SHUTS DOWN and then RESTARTS all on it's own. No BSOD or FLASH or anything, it just shuts down and resets.

I have the latest drivers for EVERYTHING on my computer. Nothing is outdated at all.

I am completely stumped and I am starting to think that it is an issue with the game and hwo it communicates with the drivers and not my hardware. Any suggestions as to how I may fix it. Or is anyone else getting the same issue.

Do a Disk check and do the check game cache in steam. you might have a corrupted block or part of the install that windows is failing on.

Unplug your headphones or any other peripheral that's not needed might be a drivers BF3 is trying to access thats funky.

Memtest definitely

remove one of the videocards incase it's SLi driver weirdness. If thats the case back up your nvidia driver to test that.

worst comes to worst prepare to try a different PSU.

Save your BIOS OC profile and reset to fail-safe defaults. to test that easy.

I would run Prime 95 overnight to make sure your CPU overclock is bulletproof.

If you overclocked your 570's I would run OCCT for 1hr+ to and check for errors.

First thing I would do is set your overclocks to default and then play the game to see if thats the culprit. I'm not an overclock guru but I "believe" that just because your overclocks aren't overheating doesn't mean the cpu/gpu is 100% reliable.

But yes it could be the game. I don't overclock my PC and BF3 has crashed to desktop 1 or 2 times but not enough to be considered an issue. Yours sounds like a hardware/driver issue. Check you event viewer to see if there are any system/application errors at the time of reboot.

Also like piscian18 said it could be the PS. I've definitely have had PS cause those symptoms in the past.

@piscian18:

I will defrag and do a repair install and see how that goes.

Memtest looks like a good idea, will run it after work and see how that turns out.

Logiech G930 is the headset I'm using and the new drivers for it suck. I already uninstallled the realtek drivers on my system since i have my usb headset. I have the money to get a good PSU but I don't want to spend money I might not need to.

@BooRadley
When I get home I'll run prime 95 for 5 hours if I have to but my temperatures are ice cold on my CPU, and this only seems to happen in BF3. Though it is the only game that I have played for long periods of time since I got my second card.

Hell, I'll even get a AX1000W Corsair, but I don't think it's a hardware error persay.

@Sam

How do I check my event viewer though, will it tell me what is the culprit after the computer resets or right before.

Temperature isn't the only concern when checking for CPU Stability, but people seem to push 2600k's harder than that so it might not be an issue. Still a good idea to run a long prime95 run and a memtest.

That being said, I think it's probably related to the SLI/ PSU as others have said. Does it work fine with one card?

gonna play with one card when i get home. But the thing is...it's almost completely random, I might be able to pay 2hours no crash and then BAM, it just shuts down.

Could it be that my PSU can't handle SLI570's. Should I plan on getting a AX1000.

Personally, I would run those other tests to make sure everything is stable with one card before buying a new PSU. Depends how much patience you have.

Not much, but I also don't want to spend money I dont' have to. Besides, I just googled this issue and other people have gotten the same erros. Not many, but a few.

With the same or similar hardware? Did a new PSU fix the problem?

^No one really was able to get it to work properly. They just keep on talking about how it might be the software or hardware and I know this already. And everyone keeps saying how it could be the PSU -.-...
I'm going to run stress tests: OCCT and FURMARK for my GPU...and Prime 95 (CPU) and MemTest for my Ram.

If they all pass then I'll play some crysis on the most intensive parts.

How long should I Run Prime 95 for BTW. And should I keep my OC settings or go all stock and see if that solves the issue, and it may just be that my PSU can't handle 2600k Oced and 2 570s, or it's defective.

I still think its just BF3 and it's coding. :)

I agree to take your CPU down to stock and see if that's the issue. I've heard quite a few people with Sandy Bridge CPUs have their OC be 24 hours Prime95 stable, but not game stable...seems to be some difference there.

I didn't even read the OP.

If your computer restarts on its own without BSOD and you have error reporting set to not "automatically restart"

Then it is power supply. 99.9 percent sure.

I was having a very similar issue...The fix was to roll back my drivers to the older beta drivers and do a clean instal. This fixed all the crashes and hard locks on my pc playing BF3.

Hmm if it was an issue with the game i know it wouldn't be crashing my computer like this. It might just be my PSU. I am returning it right now and calling corsair customer support. I hate this -.- ! . I might just get an RMA and buy a NZXT 1000W PSU. I don't think i can trust Corsair after this unfortunately.

Gonna play some Bad Company 2 in the meantime and try to force a shutdown and if it happens in another game then it is definitely my PSU.

@Ryan

Were you getting hard Crashes like me where it just shuts off. If the game just freezes its most likely a GPU issue, or VRM problem. My computer is literally just shutting off in an instant. No warning, a wave, nothing just a shut off.

Try the older beta drivers 1st before you start tearing everything apart. I would get online (happened in sigle player also) be able to play for random amounts of time. The game would freeze up and the monitor would go to sleep. PC would still be running but unreponsive. Would have to power down to get back to windows with no errors in the logs. BF3 was the only game this would happen to me in. Played around 10 other game with no issues. Go back to BF and crash. Rolled back drivers to 285.38 and all my BF issues are fixed. Game studders a little more but at least is playable. I have since installed the 285.79 but havent been able to test them out yet. I also used drive sweeper to clean out the nvidia drivers from my system.

Alright I need everyone's help on this. I just opened my case and noticed that my 2 6PIN power connectors to my GPU were not seated all the way in. I would say it was like 70% of the way into the GPU. I have just put them back in and pushed it in 100percent.

Could this have been why my PSU was shutting off. The corsair people are telling me no, but I'm not too sure -.- . What do you guys think. Has this happened to anyone before?

^And no I haven't tried on GPU yet.

The one time I have seen a PC just suddenly shut down with no warning was when RAM was good enough to run most of the time and even pass one pass of Memtest86+ with no errors. Upon further, deeper investigation, I found that it would fail every third pass of Memtest86+. Updating the motherboard's BIOS and chipset drivers solved the problem completely.

Well, I removed my PSU from my computer. I have already gotten my RMA approved and will send it once i get them to pay for my shipping since i've only had it for one month.

But...after putting my psu back into my computer, i have not gotten one crash in BF3 SP, and i played like 3 missions on there. Afterwards I got on multiplayer and played 2 games, then I got bored and let my little brother play for a while, he played about 4 MP matches with my clan...and...

Not one ShutDown or crash.

37C CPU Load 68C in SP and 72 in MP GPU Load on Both GPUs (200mm) fan blowing straight into them 36C HDD
What I did was:

Remove PSU and make sure everything was clicked in all the way into all ports

Put Bios settings back to default.

Temperaturs in BF3 were about

Removed OC on CPU

After work today I'm going to play some more and see if i can re apply my OC and see if maybe something I did fixed the problem.

...Either way... I am RMAing my PSU, because...well it's a new PSU and i want to be sure that this issue wont' come back again. Might still sell it and and get a 1000w Coolermaster Silent Pro. FUTURE PROOFING reasons.

What do you guys think...will the shutdowns come back...or did something I did fix the problem.

You could simply invest in a killawatt and check the wattage when running a game of BF 3. If it said like 550-650 watts your PS should still be good, but if it's saying 750+ peaks and crashing out on you, you get the idea.

What efficiency is your PS anyhow?

•80 PLUS Bronze certified, delivering up to 85% energy efficiency under real-world load conditions

That's what it says about my PSU on the corsair site.

You don't need 1000 watts for a home computer. Hell you let alone need 500 watts. I am rocking a 7 year old 500 watt Seasonic with my specs below and I doubt it hits 300 watts at load. I haven't killawatt tested it.

Do you have "restart on hard ware errors turned off?" If you do and it constantly reboots without crash the PSU has failed.

You can get a 10,000 watt power supply, but if it fails the wattage really doesn't matter.

The memtest passes generally depend on the settings. There are different tests you can perform that take longer and are more memory intensive.

The Corsair people are right.

RMAing it tomorrow. Just gonna keep using it. Doubt this problem would have gone away like this anyways.

I'm a little late to this topic.

Last year my PC would also randomly turn off and restart, but only when playing graphic intensive games. I ended up narrowing it down to something in my motherboard. It was no longer reading CPU and GPU temps correctly, so the fans wouldn't automatically speed up when needed, and would cause an overheat/restart after a few minutes of gameplay. I re-installed drivers, OS, everything, and narrowed it down to a hardware issue somewhere.

--I was able to circumvent the problem by downloading 3rd party software to manually speed up my fans anytime I wanted to play a game. Although an annoying extra step, it worked just fine.

Well...no more crashes. I took out my PSU and put it back in and nothing.

I do remember after one crash a while ago in BF3 that one of my cards became disabled in nVidia control panel. I looked into my case and and noticed that the pins were a not all the way in. Actually, they were'nt even locked in with the clip.

So it was the pins, played bf3 for HOURS like 5 hours, i played for like 2 and my lil' brother for 4 or 3 and it did not crash once.

Got tomorrow off, gonna play all day, and if all is well I'll cancel the RMA.

Those kinds of issues are definately power related. Removing the power supply then putting it back in and reconnecting may have been the fix. Battlefield 3 is a much more demanding program and it would cause you hardware to draw more power. As components heat up and cool down they move slightly. This may have been the culprit if a fan spins higher due to heat the loose connections may have been causing a short causing the shutdown. vibrations and swelling and shrinking due to heat however minimal it may be can be enough to cause shorts with loose connections.

I'm so used to having laptops with a whole different set of issues. Desktops are a bit overwhelming, they're massive. Going to finish testing tomorrow and I will post some pics of my set up and give everyone a clearer picture.

Parts contracting could have caused the already loose connections to create a short. Never thought of it that way. That may have been why that one time my other card dissapear from NVCP during that one BF3 crash.

P.s.

I re applied my overclock to my CPU and disabled HT again (BF3 stutters with it on), and it still did'nt crash. We will see.

It sounds like an overclocking issue. I find that nothing stresses a PC like a demanding game.

Maybe but it is unlikely. At boot up you have a number of vibrations that would more than likely cause a short then.

Not sure what the OP issue was but 9 out of 10 times these issues are power related.

hey dude...I feel your pain...I had an issue on my old comp where it would just turn off as well...Everyone said it was psu prob or overheating. I actually became very adept and psu and voltage after all the hours of troubleshooting. I did replace the psu, and still had infrequent shut downs but after I reinstalled windows and changed out my hard drive, the issue pretty much resolved...As for BF# and the shutdowns...I have not had the shut downs but I get the "bf3 has stopped working" app crash every 5 minutes. I troubleshooted it, and updated bf3 and did a repair install and still had issues. I found after trial and error if I played on a "non-punkbuster" server, I had NO crashes.....So, I went into the BF3 install folder and clikced on the punkbuster exe, and reinstalled/repaired the file and I actually have not had one crash since....Try that..Hope your new PSU helps.....

Been playing all day. And not one crash. And this is after several hours. The problem seems to be gone.
