BF3 PerfOverlay, does this look right?

ok, so from what i understand is that you want your gpu to be over your cpu
without either of them spiking high?

I normally play on high settings but when i do i get cpu spikes every couple seconds, and i can notice the game hiccup every time a spike occurs
(obviously these numbers are constantly changing so these are just the numbers i see it at the most)
CPU Avg 11.00 Min 1.96 Max 19.00 - 40.00
GPU Avg 14.00 Min 9.63 Max 16.94

When i set my graphics to medium settings i get no spikes at all, except for when i die the cpu spikes. However, my cpu seems to be used more than my gpu on medium settings
CPU Avg 8.00 Min 3.74 Max 11.00 - 19.00
GPU Avg 6.00 Min .90 Max 14.00 - 19.00

i would provide screen shots but i cant printscreen in bf3.

does this look right?

use fraps to screenshot it or if you have msi afterburner, i believe theres a screenshot option in that as well.

as far as the numbers go i'm not sure, but what are your cpu and gpu loads when playing?

How are you doing on video ram? Maybe you're thrashing on higher settings.

Yeah go into the afterburner settings and check the boxes to also show memory usage while gaming and see where that ends up.

the gpu mem on both my cards is like 920-950 mb at the highest

Not quite, both of the graphs should be on the same level. Some explanation: link.

In the last 3 screenshots you are a little bit GPU limited, at 920-950 MB VRAM usage you are closing to the max capacity of your cards.

I was able to get rid of off the most CPU spikes using a custom User.cfg:
RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit 1

Need to show GPU clocks on OSD as well to make sure both are running the same.

920-950 on BF3 actually means that it is maxing out the 1GB, if you read around a bit you will notice that BF3 always leaves a small sliver of ram when it is maxed.

Dial some settings down and it should smooth out your performance, i mean, you dont have to go entirely down to medium, start at high preset and just lower a couple settings.

That's cutting it pretty close to 1gb tbh, you really might be thrashing at times. Couple things...

If MSAA gets enabled, turn it off, you should save some memory (and a considerable amount of performance, and imo FXAA does quite a good job anyway on low / medium without looking blurry)

And if you are really desperate, you can kill dwm.exe to relinquish a nice chunk of memory back.

edit:

Also the numbers are in milliseconds.

16.67~ = about 60 fps
33.33~ = about 30 fps

So at high, looking at your numbers, you shift more towards being GPU bound than CPU.

That 2nd to last pic outdoor looking scene with 980MB hit the ceiling of your memory. You would prob experience less hiccups if you dropped it a quality setting or tweaked a few single options down. Depends how smooth you want it to run and how smooth it is when playing but you are using all your available memory when playing BF3 outdoors I think from the pics you posted.

Those 460's in SLI would be perfect for maxed out Team Fortress 2 (Because I never see my TF2 memory go past 780MB I think), BF3 can go over 1500MB single screen high/ultra...from what I've seen people post on here and youtube. I believe Eyefinity 3 screen resolutions can take up 2.5GB in BF3. If you really want better information maybe someone will post with higher end cards their settings and memory consumption, or you will have to investigate on the web by looking around.

Since your playing BF3 I would recommend a 2GB-3GB card.

Turn Blur off, drop from HBAO to the next level down and possibly drop the Anisotropic. That should smooth you out.

is there a danger in running at 900+mbs?

Nope. It's a good thing that you see such high VRAM usage: You're actually getting use out of the VRAM you paid for. With that said, as others have said, the high VRAM usage is a possible cause for your less than smooth or high FPS. So lower your settings and such and you should be ok.

ok, ill do some more test and report back.
