BF3 freezing

Hi all,

I have this rig:

i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz (1.3v) with a CM 212 Evo ,
Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz 1.5v 2x4GB ,
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 rev1.3 ,
Gigabyte 560Ti OC ,
Intel 120GB SSD ,
Seagate 640GB ,
Corsair VX550W

It can pass IBT and Prime 95, but I would get frequent freezing in BF3 - usually a hard freeze (game image gets stuck and remains on screen, must press reset button to restart) or other times the screen goes white (can still use task manager to quit bf3.exe).

Load temps are 69C for the GPU and low 60s for the CPU which seem reasonable to me. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
 
Well you can always bump up the voltage for the cpu and see if it helps.

Is your GPU factory overclocked or did you do it yourself?

What are your memory timings at? What are they rated for?

What tests are you running in prime95 and IBT? Are you using maximum memory when running IBT?

The GPU is factory overclocked to 900, but I needed to increase its voltage to 1.015 to get it to run at this speed. I've dialed it back down to 850 though and BF3 still freezes occasionally with my CPU overclocked.

According to http://www.corsair.com/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1600c9.html, my memory timings are 9-9-9-24. I haven't touched anything here... just left it on auto or SPD.

In Prime, I used the blend test and in IBT, I did 20 passes on Very High.

Is it possible my power supply (VX550W) is running out of juice when overclocked?

Back off the clock on your cpu a bit.

I've had certain games that didn't like either my cpu OR my gpu overclocks... even though they passed all sorts of stress tests.

I've tried 4.0, even as low as 3.7, and still experienced a hard lock...
 
only time I have had BF3 freeze like that is when I had my 560ti (non 448) overclocked beyond 900 core (shader and memory were bumped way up also, dont remember how high, I just randomly turned everything up beyond my current oc on the card)

unhappy card, powersupply, or driver issue maybe. I'm using 285.62.
 
Hmm, I hadn't though about software drivers at all. I'm using 290.53. Maybe I'll roll back and see if that helps.
 
dont roll back! I believe that can jack stuff up now with the nvidia drivers. Just do an uninstall via the control panel, reboot, and install the different driver.

as per the 280.xx series release notes from nvidia...

Do not Use Windows Rollback for Graphics Drivers
To reinstall a previous or older NVIDIA graphics driver, do not use the Windows
rollback feature. This method will not reliably restore all the previous driver files.
Instead, use the Windows Add and Remove programs to remove the current driver, and
then install the older driver using setup.exe.

oops, too late! I actually didn't use the rollback feature built in to Windows. I simply installed on top of the 290 drivers without uninstalling... if it still freezes, I'll do a complete uninstall / reinstall and see if that helps.
 
@ suklee Your problem is fairly "common" among Gigabyte 560 Ti OC users :(
For some the lock-up/crashing went away upping the GPU voltage or lowering it's frequency. ;)
 
Hey, thanks for that link. I flashed the bios and will see how it fares. Strangely, EasyBoost now reports I have F32 but their website says only F31 is available.

Edit, not sure if it's too early but I played a few hours tonight and no freezing! Could be a combination of the WHQL drivers + new BIOS :cool:

To add up:

- In-game random freezes while playing BF 3 also happens on pc gamers using Radeon video cards, the majority of reason who are
experiencing this problem are those with heavily overclocked Radeon models particularly those who owns hi end 6900 series ones (6950 and
6970). What other gamers do before playing BF 3 is they ease their overclock setting a bit (through the use of pre-defined oc settings in
Catalyst and Trixx) then launch BF 3 and the freezing problem goes away...
