Just finish ordering the parts for my Battlefield 3 build this weekend. Will be using some old parts too (case, power supply, dvd, etc). I know the game hasn't shipped yet, but my intent is to run Ultra mode with all the bells and whistles on 1080p. Here it goes:

Asus Crosshair V
AMD Bulldozer FX-8150P @ >5 Ghz ( waiting for this weeks release. Hopefully!:rolleyes:)
H100 w/ push-pull config using COUGAR CF-V12H fans.
2 X CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 (16 gigs)
2 X Patriot Wildfire 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC SSD (Raid-0)

Will be more than enough for BF3. It will likely be good enough for Metro: Last Light, too. Which personally, I see being the best looking game to ever be released. It will definitely be the best on consoles, hands down. BF3 = Most realistic, Metro Last Light = best looking, sharpest impressive graphics.
 
That's what I was aiming for. I haven't upgraded graphics in 3 years (4870 512mb crossfired). I figured I could splurge just a bit, I was considering the 6990, but decided against it in terms of price. Plus, I think the performance of these cards should provide a similar experience.
 
If your going to be running Eyefinity. I would wait for the next Gen cards. My 2 6970's are struggling a tad @ 5760 X 1080p. Otherwise if your only going 1920 x 1XXX then you should be fine with that.
 
Erm, he'll be more than 'fine' @ 1920x dude, it would be a complete waste infact. (considering the new cards are around the corner)
 
Not a waste, that's about right for maxing battlefield 3's beta. Any less and you'd start to notice performance dropoff. The full game may be more demanding, so that may be borderline enough for max detail. New cards are also a lot further than 'around the corner'.
 
max detail in mp is really not that important to me, sp is another story.

That's total bullshit lol. I have a single Gainward GTX580 and am averaging 60fps on Ultra (never drops below 50)

Though the only thing really held back that will differ (in performance) from the BETA is tessellation.. I'm very happy to have the visuals just like the screens I've posted. as long as I average @ 60fps.

the whole OMG YOU NEED 580'S IN SLI TO RUN DIS GAME!!! is all Nvidia Marketing, made to trick people like you into thinking they need to spend $1000 to make this game look good, which is stupid.
 
Too bad no one knows for sure what Ultra/high will truly look like, so speculating future performance on a month old beta is rather moot.
 
You seemed to have missed my point. Like I said, I'm very happy to have the game looking just as the screens I have posted.. if the beta's version of ultra ends up being the retails version of 'medium' which I HIGHLY doubt, then that's what I will play the game at. if I have to disable tessellation for a 60fps avg, I will do that too.

But I honestly believe running at 1920x resolutions, single GPU setups (580's and upwards) will be fine for maxing this game out.

Totally agree Roliath, that's why I considered the 6950gb crossfired @ my res. for the final version.

The dev's DID say that ultra would take dual 580's, but they didn't mention at what res. I don't game at 1080p so I can't comment on the performance of dual 6950's but going by the beta my 6970's ate this game @ 1600p ranging anywhere from 45fps min to 100fps+.

Well those who went to PAX Prime in August and played bf3, the settings were locked but the machines were running dual 580's and the performance was not 60fps solid. That's a fact.
I could care less for a marketing campaign, as I don't plan to buy shit for this game's release. I'm playing it on my rig as it stands.

that's cool, i could care less. i'm just stating the facts, if that's so hard to believe than so be it. the dev's said it would take dual 580's, whether that's a marketing campaign or not the fact still remains it was not 60fps solid at pax prime with dual 580's. Can't comment on what build they were running or what settings it was set to since they were locked.

Not really, considering I more often recommend people to use crossfire over SLI.
In the more demanding areas of the game. with all the settings at Ultra, not just some of them, one GTX580 will average around 55fps, and drop to a minimum of about 40, which is insufficient for many (not all of course), but considering the Beta doesn't even have all of the graphics options available, the full version is likely to perform worse.
 
Lets make this simple. If you have a single 1080/1200 screen a 6970 or 580 will do you just fine. If you went the eyefinity route like I did a second card is something a) you're going to want severly or b) you've already ordered it/got it.
 
Fine, but not perfect. One GTX580 will do very well running the game at max settings at 1920x1080, but if you want a solid 60fps throughout, including big firefights, you'd want a bit more power, especially if you're running 1920x1200 instead of 1080p.
