I wanted to get a feel for those of you with similar setups, how did Caspian Border play for you? Even running 2560x1600 at High, I would get constant choppiness, dropping below 20 FPS regularly. I dropped all the way down to 1920x1200 and it seemed I was averaging 50 FPS, spiking to 70-80, dropping to 40, but even at 50 FPS in firefights it felt incredibly choppy and not smooth at all.

Unfortunately I was out most of the weekend so I didn't get to do any logging; I played for a few hours, thinging I had GPUZ logging, but it wasn't checked. :( It seemed as though, if I would quickly alt-tab, that it was barely using my 2nd GPU but I couldn't be sure.

Anyone else out there have some actual data? I'm really concerned about the overall poor performance, and want to see if it may be an issue on my end.

(Disclaimer: I fully expect better drivers + retail version to make a substantial impact for the better, but still need to see if it's a problem on my end.)

The clue is to get rid of the AA and the AO. I had frame rates in the 30s in outside areas. Getting rid of AA and AO upped me to 65-70 which is nice and smooth. All this was tested in Paris Metro, but when I played Caspian Border for a couple of hours the performance seemed similar.
You can definitely run 2560x1600 Ultra on a pair of 6970s (I do!) but you'll need to cut the AA to do it. Now that the beta has ended, however, the retail version might be more demanding since the Beta was missing some graphics options, so that's a potential spanner in the works.

Im running (2) 5850s in crossfire, with an i7 860 @4ghz, 8gigs ram, and the game ran fine on high @ 1080p so long as I kept the AA off.

Only problem I ran into was on caspian border if I scoped my fps felt like they cut in half. Id look up at the corner and see 65fps, but when I scoped it felt like 20-30fps even though it showed 65. something was definetly not correct.

I hadn't tried getting rid of the AO, I'll have to do that. AA makes a really noticable difference in this game; usually I only notice if I'm staring and looking for it, but with all the detail on the screen now I can tell immediately. I'm seriously considering getting a 3rd 6970, as I want AA and AO on.

Oh true, so do I - the game is really obviously lacking in the AA department with it off, horrible aliases everywhere. For me though, I haven't bought the game yet (nor do I want to until I can see the retail version is much less buggy than beta - not holding my breath on that one!) so it makes no sense planning hardware upgrades just for that one title. If push really does come to shove, I can plan on swapping my 6970s for a pair of 7970s when they're released later next year, but honestly, I was planning on holding out until quite late in the HD7 series day, or even the HD8 series before upgrading. Very little really needs this much GPU power that I actually bother playing.

I have a 5830 with a 2500k and 8GB of RAM. Would you think my performance would improve if I bought another 5830 on the cheap?

Depends how cheap, your performance would improve substantially, but you'd still be below the performance of a single GTX580. You'd be better off selling the 5830 and buying a pair of 6850s or 6870s. That would do far more.

Ok I know what AF and AA are but what is AO? And yes when you turn AA off I got at least another 10 frames more with it off...

Oh ok I know it as HBAO :) and yes with that off your frames go way way up..

HBAO is one type of AO, in the same sense that MSAA is one type of AA.
SSAO is another type of AO. You really don't want either switched on if you want to gain that extra performance.

Yeah I noticed a huge improvement in frame rates with AA and AO off...

I was not having frame rate issues at all in the BETA 1920x1200 Ultra settings. Tearing and flashes like a mother outdoors. But aside from that the rates on my rig were pegged at 60 with vsync enabled. I really expected even the BETA to be a lo more GPU demanding.

The BF3 specific preview drivers were causing BSOD's so I went with the last WHQL. Out of curiosity I disabled xfire and went with a single unlocked 6950..rates were still pegged at 60 with everything enabled on ultra settings. I'm not sure why others are experiencing lower rates at the same resolution.

You must have been inside on Metro to be getting 60fps with a single GPU. 60fps with two 6950s at 1920x1200 is to be expected almost everywhere really, so that doesn't surprise me, but I don't believe you got 60fps everywhere with a single 6950, if you had all the details up, that goes against everyone else's experiences, including benchmarks.

Yeah you and I have similar setups and at 1920x1200 with my single 6950 2GB BF3 outside was between 30-50 and that is on HIGH or MED settings with AA and AO turned off. That's why I think I will wait before I go cross fire. Performance seems to be all over the place with the beta even on systems with similar specs. I hope the final is much more optimized

^^^ Which is exactly why I said I was surprised. Even on Caspian I never had rate issues.. and FRAPS was pegged at 60 on full servers. Spose I could have had it configured wrong.. but I checked the settings several times.

I anticipated GPU heavy loads with BF3 which is why I intentionally over~bought two 6950's for a single monitor to begin with. I like to play games with all the bells and whistles enabled. Guess I'll find out for sure in a few weeks. :D

Garbage, Maybe I had a driver problem, but with AMD Catalyst 10.10 Preview V2, Crossfire HD4850 512m, Even though my framerates were mostly within enjoyable (40-60), the system chugged and stuttered. Disabled Crossfire in CCC, ran with nearly half the frames but somehow smoother... AA off, AO off, Most settings set to High.

I played for about 15-20 minutes or so with a 2600k, and 2 5870s. 1920 x 1200 resolution.

I think had everything on high, can't say what the AA or AF was. The framerate was pretty solid at 60 fps. I don't remember ever seeing the fps dip below the 50s.

I also had a GPU for both GPUs and they were pegged at 90%-99% usage.
