I am wanting to try one of those large scale FPS games...
What are the differences between these 2 apart from the nowadays vs futuristic thing?
Do I really HAVE to do the whole vehicles thing or can I just walk around and shoot people?
Also, is there any other game that could do the job (ET: QW)?

thanx.

No jets in 2142 and the vehicles have been nerfed. But 2142 has more unlocks, better sniping, and improved server browser.

The only thing that i like about bf2 is the jet fights and the overpowered vehicles.

You can walk but it will be awful on those open maps. But for urban maps, walking is fine. QW:ET is similar to 2142 but it felt too fast paced and arcady for me. I don't play QW anymore. I prefer 2142. I think frontlines:fuel of war will be a great alternative to 2142. I tried the beta and it felt like bf2 with tweaks.

As someone who prefers the infantry side of the game I really dig the changes they made in BF 2142. Much more fun less time dying to tanks like in BF2. Titan mode is a blast too.

The booster pack is worth it too. I really like the booster pack map with the titan docks (can't recall the name been a while).

2142 is almost 100% balanced play. There really isn't anything that over powers like the planes in BF2.

Thing like the support class actually work now where their weapon should be fairly accurate.

The unlocks are nice as then again help balance some stuff out.

You can get around APMs in 2142. You can blow up explosive with the sniper rifle or rdx shotgun, or defuse them.

I think it's slight more teamplay based with the vehicles, you can use a tank like you did in bf2. No coaxial machinegun.

There are lots of pluses about 2142, I played bf2 and I still play 2142 and overall I have 100% more enjoyed 2142 over bf2. The balance is a huge factor in this.

Now it still has its quirks but what FPS doesnt.

booster pack? is that an expansion pack or an in-game item / perk?

It's kind of stupid. you have to pay $10 to EA and download it via their site, my friend wanted to do it, but a glitch in their system would not let him, they refuse to refund him...

Anyway, I prefer 2142. Compared to BF2, they have nerfed the game to make it very balanced. Game mostly focuses on infantry combat, as vehicles do not do too much good. Weapons are great, not overpowered by any sence, and maps are very fun. Over the two, I would go with 2142, unless you really enjoy camping in hte tank all the time. BF2 has larger scale maps for the most part, in most cases you barely see any firefights, just vehicle stuff.

I used to play 2142 alot, great game, awesome unlocks :) .

vehicles are very good in 2142.......
Not as easy as bf2 because you need to work a bit harder to stay alive.
Heck I can survive entire rounds in the same APC.

one thing to keep in mind if you have played bf2 is that 2142 is a different game. You can't go into it with the mind set of I was good at bf2 so I'll rock here. It is not 100%, I was good at BF2 and started 2142 with the thought. I got my world rocked until I got it through my head that it was a different game and needed to be treated as such.

The booster pack is called Northern Strike. It adds a few maps, a few new vehicles, a new map mode, and new textures.

BF2142 was fun for a while but much like BF2, there are several things about the game that weigh heavily on the fun factor. Almost constant artillery strikes, rampant spawn camping, nearly useless anti-air (fixed position easy to avoid, etc), and instantly repaired equipment just by dropping a supply crate next to something. If you can find a good server that is infantry only or has the orbital strike disabled, it's fun for a while.

Much like the original ships in BF1942, moving the titans causes massive lag on most servers because they don't have the horsepower to handle the geometry transformation.

The squad concept is useful but all too often people don't bother joining squads or don't work together as a squad anyway.

Someone in a gunship that knows what they're doing and has a halfway competent gunner will dominate a map.

Some maps are good, some aren't, some are down right terrible.

Until you rank up and unlock a few of the perks, you will be frustrated playing against people who have all the unlocks and all the upper tier weapons.

The pod deployment concept is fun the first few times, but quickly becomes tedious and frustrating because you are your own huge smoking lit up beacon pointing right to where you are going to land and be disoriented for 2 seconds while the smoke clears and you figure out which way is which. Perfect for spawn campers to set up shop and wait for you to arrive.

I've played both and prefer 2142 as it's more balanced. Tanks don't annilate infantry like in BF2 and the average infantryman can use his RDX to take out tanks, Battlewalkers, etc.

Just don't attempt to run a 2142 server. The cost is outrageous and multiple crashes a day are the norm. I ran one for over a year and tried 3x providers and a slough of tricks. I finally gave up and went to COD4.

I have both with all the expansions (I seem to be a glutton for punishment, seeing as both had issues with patching the games, then requiring to reload the entire game again to try and fix it.)

I enjoy both and since they are both pretty cheap now, might as well get both and play them.
BF2 was $10 and the entire BF2 with all the expansions was $30 at Best Buy and Circuit City.
2142 was $20 last time I looked, maybe it's cheaper now.

Definitely prefer 2142 over BF2. As others have said, 2142 is very balanced, and the vehicles don't dominate (they're used mostly for transportation) and let you get into the action quickly.

I thought BF2142 is a better game also, but why is the gaming community so much smaller on 2142 than on BF2?

Way too many people got pissed (and rightly so) at EA for screwing up BF2 and just didn't waste the money to buy it. I didn't buy BF2142 for a long time after it came out. I was unimpressed by the lack of support and all the bullshit EA was putting out with BF2.

I wouldn't have bought it at all but I had a friend who did buy it and told me that they fixed a lot of the problems with BF2 and that he thought it was really good. I caved and bought it because I wanted to shoot at him some more. ;)

In the end, it turned out to be somewhat better than BF2, but still a crappy EA game with crappy EA game bugs and crappy EA game support. :(

I find myself going back to BF2 sporadically for hours at a time and it always seems to quench a certain thirst I have more large scale shoot-em-ups like this. For 2142, I haven't wanted to go back ever since I stopped playing.

I have a about 70,000 points on BF2 and 60,000 on 2142. It's much harder to get points in BF2 so even though I have over 250 hours in the game over two years, I'm still many ranks away from a general.

BF2 Infantry only servers is vastly superior in my opinion to BF2142.
I hope BF3 will change my mind.

when I want a FPS game to play I expect it to be mostly if not all infantry fighting, because that's what FPSes should be. Vehicles may sound cool at first but they are just too hard to balance.

You nailed it. I was paying over $2,400 a year for a ranked 64 player server and while we got into the top 25 most popular in the world I gave up b/c it crashed multiple times per day and nobody seemed to give a shit at EA.

I only play Karkand 24/7 as it's one of the few good maps in that game. BF2 has its own faults such as its terrible hit box on character models.

I sure hope BF3 does come out because BF2 is starting to date itself.

I've played all of the Battlefield series and must say that BF2 is still my favorite. BF2142 is a very fun game to play when you're in a squad and playing Titan mode. If you prefer the more futuristic type game play, go with BF2142. And if you like urban warfar (amongst other settings), BF2 is still fun.

BF2142 would be a good choice. The gameplay is fun and is easier when it comes to using infantry since in BF2 vehicles are insanely strong. The graphics is also good in BF2142.

The real fun is BF1942!

2nd that pardner :)

As for BS2vs2142, I'm all for BF2. vehicles vs. infantry, yeah well vehicles will ALways annihilate infantry I don't buy the 'more balanced' arguments. Many many BF2 servers are infantry only, aside from that, 2142 seems too futuristic/spacewars compared to BF2 & slightly more realistic/authentic. If you want to have fun w/cartoons than team fortress is the path best traveled :D

2142 is in my opinion is a lot better than BF2. More unlocks, better game modes, sweet weapons, bonus equipment for being in a squad like automated turrets, customization of your soldier's equipment, dogtags for knife kills, better graphics and more. Buy 2142. I think you'll like that better. There's less bugs in 2142 as well.

you have two options as I see it:

  1. Download the DEMO for both games
  2. Buy both games, BF2 is like ten BUCKS.

BF2. 2142 is just lame. It was a pathetic attempt to steal the thunder of QWET which turned out to be a dud.

The only vehicle that is over powered in BF2 are the jets. Everything else is managable. Just avoid 64 player maps and you are good. On 32 player maps with lots of armor any two good AT infantry players can take any piece of armor down before the driver knows what hit them.

Another vote for BF2 (although I personally would want you to get BF1942 w/ the Desert Combat mod IF there were more active servers available). BF2142 requires that you log on to a central server regardless that you play singleplayer or on a local,non-ranked lan setup. Not to mention that in my personal experience that I would get disconnected frequently from the server unless I put my computer in the DMZ.
Yes, BF2 has it's own set of problems. The bunny-hopping and the memory leaks may have been fixed, but there are still balancing issues with a certain jet (veterans, you know which what I'm talking about), anti-aircraft, and (c)artillery (although I believe the last problem may have been fixed).

@Luthorcrow
What is wrong with 64-player maps? Too much lag? Too large maps?

Two really, one they were never used in comp (not that I am doing that anymore). Two, most of the 64 maps were jet maps and hence everyone else are targets. Unless you like to fly jets or be bombed by jets, 16-32 is where the sweet spot is.

Which is why I rarely played on jet maps. I'm all about infantry, only using vehicles if I absolutely must. Karkand, Road to Jahalabad (sp?), and a number of other 64 player maps don't have jets or choppers at all. You can even play on infantry only servers that take out all vehicles.

When I was still playing BF2, I like it a lot. I tried the 2142 demo but the futuristic thing wasn't working for me on this type of game. I did play mostly infantry maps like the Road blah blah blah map and Kark. Playing the Kark, infantry only, small map with 64 players was fun. I would play with vehicle enable maps if I wanted to do the "mine" dance.
