BF2 Newbie Questions

Alright, where to begin. I think the demo is fucking awesome. I was on for about 6 hours last night trancing out on it. I started at like 6:00pm, and it felt like i blinked and it was midnight, which is always a sign of a great game. But i'm new to BF, so i have some noob questions i need answered if you'd all be so kind.

1.) when you kill somone and they drop their pack, can you pick it up?
2.) when supplies are dropped, how to you obtain them from that crate?
3.) How do you chat in-game? I know how to use the pre-defined sayings, but how do you write whatever you want?
4.) At the end of a round they show the scores with like 4 different columns. What do the columns represent?
5.) I've seen people on here talk about forming a clan. How do you form a clan and play at the same time? In other words, how do you guarantee that your "clan" is all able to joiin the same server?
6) Is there anyway to play single player with the planes so that i can practise flying without being a dick and ruining it for my team? Or is that just a demo thing?
7.) I've seen some very coordinated attacks with players working together with like a plane dropping bombs, a tank pulling up, and ground troops coming from the other direction. How are people coordinating this between each other. Is there some other way to communicate i'm missing?

The first one is points, which you get for doing things like killing and capturing flags. I'm not 100% sure of all the ways to get points in the second column, but it seems to go up for flag caps. The third column is kills and the fourth is deaths.

There are only two ways to "guarantee" it - rent a server for that clan or join one with a sufficient number of free spots.

Yes, there's a way to enable the 32 player map in single player. I don't remember what to do, however.

More than likely they're on Vent or TS with each other and are coordinating the attacks. Not many people use the in-game voice.
 
Great info (some of which I didnt know)

I really want to know how to use the planes in SP as well, so I have time to map out my joystick correctly instead of stealing planes online to test.

its frustrating that way
 
for your #7 question, in BF2 there are squads and a commander role, and people give squads orders of where to attack/defend and whatnot. Then lines show up on the minimap and your squad shows up in green. Its too much to explain in text

To play with the aircraft just create your own server and put a password on it, you can crash all you like then :)

Figure since I finally downloaded the BF2 demo I'd ask my own share of newbie questions.

A: Inverted Y-axis on helicopters. Who the hell made it default that pushing the joystick forward causes the helicopter to nose up and back to nose down? Now, the question is, I did not see for mapping where it allows you to invert the y-axis for helicopters. The airplanes are fine. So how I can invert it for helicopters?
 
For practice flying, go to Multiplayer, Create Local Game. Enter in a gibberish password. You will have a game with no other players where you can practice flying. Unfortunately, no bots either, but at least you can figure out how to fly straight and level without killing your teammates.

And the helos don't fly like DC. They seem to have been dumbed down, I'm sorry to say. They are easier to fly, but not nearly as flexible or as fun.
 
a friend of mine said watching noobs try to fly in bf2 is almost as fun as the game itself. i tend to agree.

watching a mig hit its own bomb = priceless.
 
I'm definitely a BF2 n00b, but I now know that trying to fly any of the vehicles w/out a joystick is completely pointless.

Just for sh!ts & giggles, I tried to fly a chopper last nite... Took off, wobbled about perilously for all of 15 seconds, & promptly nose-dived into a hill. Woke up my wife I was laughing so hard... :D
 
the coolest thing ive seen so far was...a commander sent an attack point to all the squads and if u accept it. it shows a knife on the map where to attack. I watched the map and noticed all the blue dots on my team running towards it. It was a pretty coordinated effort, everyone noticed the attack point and went at it. it was pretty sweet.

Right click on ANY weapon will bring up the zoom. Some of these are fairly minor (pistol), but they all have it.

So is there a way to save favorite servers? Are there any servers that [H]ers play on or recommend?

Props out to kick@ss... Very good info on helping a n00b out without being sarcastic.

Pigpen - Stick with it and learn. As for a clan/squad, the more you play and the better you get, people will ask you to join them. Some squads are out there for fun, some for tournaments, some take it way to serious. Be patient, and find one you like. If they have a website give it a look over and see if they will fit with your personality. Also see if they have vent or teamspeak and join them for a few nights chatting while playing. Most of all, have fun!

ive always played BF'42 and DC on Seattle T3 Servers, theyre pretty sweet.

i hang out on seattle t3's server after work daily...IP 206.63.81.3...good times there.

You is wrong be sure ;)

I find them easier to fly with the mouse and keyboard in BF2 which is very weird seeing as how I'm quite heavily into flight sims and have my nice big HOTAS sitting on my desk. I just find thet there is something about the 'flight model' that makes it easier. It does help however to have an MX700 or something woth lots of buttons so that you can set them for full forward/back/left/right deflection :)

I use the mouse/keyboard for the heli's like i did in DC, and by mesing with some of the settings it works pretty good.

I use my logitech joystick and keyboard to fly, though. Also works very good.
 
Ok... So... what's the deal with switching positions on vehicles? The standard 1/2/3/4/5 doesn't work, just switches my weapon.

Try the F1,F2,F3, etc keys.
 
I think the more important issue is, why can't I use my damn ALT keys?!!

I need them to sprint!!! :eek:

Just rebind it in options. Works like a charm.
 
the second column is your teamwork score this goes up by kill asists,reviving people, repairing stuff and following orders.
 
I seem to recall from older BF games you could check the names of your fellow vehicle occupants. Can that still be done in BF2? I can't find any such information...
 
That's the one thing I hate about all of the Battlefield games: I never can get used to the default controls, so I change just about every single one of them. :p

Really dont see whats hard about it? I just use the keyboard for planes/copters.
 
I can't play online because it won't get past the stupid fucking CREATING ACCOUNT screen. It says my main e-mail address has already registered - which is odd, because I didn't do it - yet it doesn't let me bypass the "create account" thing...I have to create an account. Stupid.
 
if you have an id at gamespy with that email it is goin to be your login otherwise you will need to use a different email addy ;) there is also a retrieve account option
 
Most of my controls were inverted.. This is because they put them in opposite order on the list from the other versions of battlefield, so when you are configuring you push the controlers in the wriong direction. Click on the item then move the joystick/controler in the other direction. The interface also does not show the orientaition of the controler compared to the mapping adding to the confusion.

Must be some darn lefty on the DEV team doing the controls. ;)

Ya EA is going to pay dearly is support costs for using Gamespy and NOT making it very very obvious.. I chose the Do not install gamespy option when I installed, so why should I EVER think im going to need to use that account.

I wouldn't be surprised if you will only need the account for playing on official ranked servers when the game is released.

I WOULD be surprised if you would only need it then. Gamespy/EA has a great opportunity here to track the game and its players by forcing our Gamespy login to play online. It might even tie in to the license key on the real version, who knows?

It might be able to help stop piracy in a Steam-esque fashion, but to a certain extent I question if EA is clever enough to do that. I just hope that other server browsers will be able to work with BF2... unless they fix that poor excuse for a server browser in the demo.
