BF2 Memory Myth

Hi Guys,

I don't want to start a flame war, but I'm getting totally great performance in BF2 with only 512 MB of RAM.

I use the default 'High' setting, no other changes - textures set to high causes me stuttering.

Anyone else?

Edit: Oh, BTW nF2, Barton 3200+, 6800GT, Onboard sound

But what are your loading times like, and how bad is the initial stutter as you look around when you first spawn in the map?

Not to mention, 'great' performance is very subjective from person to person.

Loading times are longish, I don't know now what to compare it to...about the same as D3, I guess. The initial stutter from loading a map *the first time* is about 5 seconds. After that, no dropouts, and good frame rate. Maybe also a <1s hitch the first time I fly over the city close to the ground...otherwise steady as she goes.

As I said, however, textures set to High is piggish.

What about after you've been playing for 30mins and the map changes whats it like then?

I got a low on virtual memory error after trying it for the 1st time... True i have the low size tweak on but NOTHING else ever game me issues even ut2k4, cs:s, hl2, etc. so uhh yeah...

I have been hearing different things on memory usage. I would like to see someone *cough*[H]*cough* do a test with different memory amounts loaded once the full game is released.

The demo definately has some memory managment issues. Remember though, the demo is a piece cut out of the game, so something may have been fuxored a bit. I am waiting until the full game is released until I upgrade or not.

I only have issues when I leave the game. It takes about 30 seconds before my system is usable again. Last night, the music played for about 20 seconds after I exited the game before it stopped. My rig is pretty current. (AMD64 3800+ 1Gig TwinMos@205 6800GT)

Virtual memory is your swap file. Make sure you have at least a couple of gigs free on your C: drive so that windows can do its thing without crashing. Time to archive some of that pr0n
:p

Anyway, the game runs like butter on my system: Barton 2800+, 1GB ram, 6600GT OC. I'm using the "high" setting at 1280x960, 2xAA. No stuttering at all, but longish load times.

I know what virtual memory is. Point was that NOTHING ever went over the current 256 megs of it yet bf2 did somehow even though i have 1 gig of ram!

PS: I have roughly 100 gigs free of the roughly 500 gigs total thank you much! :p

That is because BF2 uses over 700 Megs of ram and 800 Megs of swapfile.
Increase your swap and all will be good.

I prefer the UNINSTALL BF2 button! :p

The fact is, you will get overall better performance, and loading time with 1gig vs. 512. Is not a myth, please dont try and spead b.s.

My brother has a 9600 Pro, and has "great performance" to him. To me, its crap.

Well that is your choice, but you are going to miss out on a fun game because you refuse to increase your swapfile?
LOL what ever.

At 1280x960 2xaa, all high except shadows, 32 man server....950MB page file and ~900MB of physical memory used. If this is the case in the final version, they won't be getting my money.

I "only" have 512MB of RAM too, and it plays really well for me with the default settings. The load times are nowhere near that of BF1942/DC. From when I double click the icon on my desktop, I can usually be in the game, running around within 2 mins. That's accounting for game loading, looking for a server, and connecting.

According to that guide, a 4000+ w/ 2GB only beats out a 3000+ w/ 512MB by a single solitary fps. Gonna' have to call BS on that one. Mine isn't even playable at 1600x1200...not a chance in hell a slower processor and half the memory is.

So your not going to buy the game if it uses alot of memory? That seems a little crazy to me.
I think how much fun it is outweighs how much memory the game is using in my task manager.

To each his own I guess.

True gamers base their purchase decisions off of how much memory a game uses, not how fun it is.

The nerve of game developers taking up my system memory with their games! I could never enjoy BF2 knowing that much of my memory is being used. I would feel like a dirty whore

don't forget that the demo only has a 32 man map(although it can hold 64 people), the full version will include all maps at 64 man size, and if you want to play those ones it's gonna take up more ram.

will forumites ever realize that 'fine' 'perfect' 'smooth' are all subjective terms when describing gaming performance?

Not when it's using all of it, causing it to freeze numerous times and stutter literally nonstop.

You have a marginally better system than mine and I'm running everything on high accept textures. Maybe you could crank your settings down a little bit and make it run a little smoother.

All in all I think BF2 is one of the smoother demo's I've ever played and looks to be tons of fun.

How about everyone say what resolution they are running, what settings, and what hardware they have as well as whether the game stutters alot. The demo stutters very badly at the beginning of each game for me, but then it smooths out. I am running so-so settings, 2xAA (3x temporal AA though I don't understand if the 3x multiplies the 2x regular AA or what), everything high except for dynamic shadows on off, lighting, dynamic lighting, and geometry on medium. I have my geometry on medium to prevent the empty Win32 module list punkbuster kick glitch.

a64 3200+ clawhammer @ 3400+ speeds
1 gig OCZ performance series @ 220mhz 2-3-3-5
6800 ultra 425/1.1 77.30

1280x1024 everything maxed 4xAA 16xAF ok gameplay, stutters

1600x1200 everything maxed 4xAA 16xAF "Battlefield 2: Stutters"

1600x1200 everything maxed except texture to medium 4xAA 16xAF VERY SMOOTH
(Same goes for any res. lower)

1.5 GB ram @ 3-3-3-8 @ 100mhz ( pc1600 )

1600x1200 4xAA 16xAF everything maxed, VERY VERY SMOOTH no accessing hard drives. That's all I have to say :)

1680x1050
All settings at 'high'
4xAA
FRAPS report 70-80 FPS steady
The only problem I have is early in the map, I get one 2-3 second pause (game probably loading something). After that one pause, its all pretty smooth.
I don't believe you need more than 1GB memory for good performance.

"In testing out the systems, we changed up the system RAM amounts to check out the performance differences. Going from 1GB to 2GB of system RAM garnered no performance increases on our beefy testbed. We also tested out 512MB and 1GB of RAM on our Athlon 3000+ setup. Once again, the numbers don't quite meet reality head on. While using our setup with 512MB, we experienced lots of chugging due to the large textures swapping between system memory and the hard drive. If you're stuck with 512MB of RAM reducing texture quality to medium or low will help smooth out the game."

Reading comprehesion for the win!

You could have pointed that out and not been a jerk about it.

I do wonder how they benched this, clearly not a very realistic way. If it was me doing the test I would have recorded a demo of it and played it back using the BF2 TV-demo viewer deal.
