BF2 Lockup/Crash on x1800xt

I recently upgraded to the rig in my sig and I've been having trouble with BF2 locking up/crashing telling me the "VPU has recovered from an error due to not responding to driver commands" or something like that. Could this most likely be a problem with the game and the x1800xt, the video driver, or windows and dual core cpu's. I had no problem whatsoever running BF2 on my old AGP setup with 6800gt and AMD XP 3000+. Now, I cant run BF2 for more than 5 minutes without it giving me the "VPU recovery error". Ive tried Catalyst 5.12 and 5.13 and still got the same thing. I havent really noticed anything wrong with any of my other games.... Counterstrike Source and FEAR seemed to run fine. I hope its only driver issues....What do you think? Let me know if anyone else is having the same issue.

Thanks

Is this at stock or the overclocked settings in your sig? Try running the fan (i know its loud) at full speed and see what happens.

This was at overclocked settings 690/800, but the temperature stays in the 70's I believe. I tried some of my other games at this overclocked speed and they seemed fine. The card seemed 100% stable with no artifacts whatsoever. I will try the stock speeds again and see what happens. There is also some dual core fixes I will try as well and see if that helps. It could also be a driver issue. Ati will be releasing a new driver hear in the next few weeks im sure. Ill give that a try too.

Thanks

Have you tried disabling VPU recover in CCC? It might have got it's knickers in a twist for the slightest thing.

From what I understand, if your overclocking the X1800XT you're best to disable it. I have disabled it and overclocking my X1800XT at 720/800 (oc bios) and have no problems with BF2.

That sounds like a good idea. Ill try that when I get home from work. I have 5.12 Catalyst cause I was troubleshooting but got the same results. Should I revert to the 5.13 again or wait for 6.1?
Thanks for the advice.

It shouldn't really matter what version of cats you run, I haven't had any problems with either version.

Also, if your overclocking and disabling VPU recover, there's a greater need to make sure the fan can keep the card cool. I've found that the X1800XT's own fan control can't adapt as quick as I'd like and so use ATITool to control the fan (not Tray Tools as that doesn't run on either the X1800XT or RDX200 motherboard, a bug or something).

Not all XT's hit 690/800 without increasing the voltage. I would run it at stock for a day or 2 then start overclocking. BF2 is one of the most demanding games, so the fact that other games work means nothing. I have had my XT since the day they came out, and BF2 has never crashed, so I dont think its a driver issue. You just seem to have a XT that doesnt hit 690/800.
I also dont think disabling vpu recover will help, I have not disable mine and have no problems. you could flash with the PE bios floating around, from what I hear, it works with all boards, but increases the voltage which may lesson the life of you card.

The weird thing is that while overclocked to 690/800, the games seem 100% stable with absolutely no artifacts so I dont understand how it couldn't handle those speeds. Do you think installing that AMD Dual core driver fix will help with the VPU RECOVERY I keep getting?

If I try disabling VPU RECOVERY while overclocked and everything runs fine, Do I just need to worry about getting artifacts to determine whether or not its stable and not hurting the card? If im in the high 70's / low 80's should I be ok temperature wise. I remember thats what my 6800 gt usually ran at under full load when playing games. If this doesn't work, I may try flashing the bios or running ati tool and upping the core / mem voltage and bit a try there. If it turns out the card isn't stable at 690/800 that would be retarded  What a crappy overclock that would be!! :(

What version of PCB is your X1800XT? You might have an un-overclock-able card.

It seems that not all X1800XT's were created equal. To accomodate the higher clock speeds of the PE versions (and probably their customers desire to OC), ATI said the PCB had to change to control the extra power demand. You can tell the PCB version by looking at the top above the leaf blower (hsf :p ) and if it says 109-A52031-20 instead of 109-A52031-10 you have the newer PCB. Or just count the number of mosfets on the board (the newer PCB has 6).

Jump to Xbitlabs for more information.

Many AIB partners had done this straight off the bat, but some didn't. You might have been unlucky.

For starters, I have the Sapphire Brand. I will check this out as soon as I get home from work. Wish me Luck!!!

My bet is if you disable vpu-recovery, you will get hard lockups. (just a guess). Not all cores act the same, so 70-80c might be ok for some overclocked cards, but for other overclocked cards its too hot. High temp can affect overclock level is what I am trying to say. Also voltage and temperature are variables.
For instance:
80c stock volts, stock clocks card runs ok.
80c stock volts, overclocked card crashes, increase volts or decrease temps cards ok.
of course increasing volts increases temps so its a matching game.

I checked my card and it looks like I have the new PCB. I ran 3dmark05 fine all the way through and got 9940. I tried BF2 out again and I played perfect for a while then all of the sudden, the game will freeze for like 5 sec.downsize and bring up the vpu recovery window. I check my gpu temp right when it downsized and showed the vpu recovery and it showed 71 degrees. Ill try disabling it and see how my games run.

i had the same problem where BF2 would be unplayable with its constant VPU recovery errors , after trolling some message boards for a few hours i found a fix that works for 99.99% of people ... revert to Cat 5.11's , anything past that has the issue ... currently using them now and havent had a VPU recovery error in over 3 hours :)

No, I never tried Catalyst 5.11. Yesterday I tried flashing my card to the 700/800 sapphire bios and everything went good. I played battlefield 2 for an hour or so and it ran perfect. Maybe it wasn't getting enough but originally at 690/800 before the flash I wasn't getting any artifacts whatsoever so Im not sure what the problem was. Maybe they'll fix it in upcoming drivers.

easy fix

turn off temporal and/or adaptive AA in the control panel, and set all settings in the control panel to "application preference"
