BF2 Crash after Splash

With as long as BF2 has been out, it has amazed me how difficult this has been to track down the cause of. Here's my story.

Built a new PC
AMD Athlon 64 3700+
EPoX EP-9NPA+ Ultra
2x1GB G.Skill Extreme DDR400
eVGA 7800GT
BenQ 1655 DVD-RW
WD 320GB SATA HDD 16MB cache
Enermax Liberty 500w PSU
Windows XP SP2 fully updated
Directx 9.0c
Latest Forceware Drivers
LEGIT bf2
LEGIT sf expansion
No viruses, spyware, etc.

The symptoms:
I start the game, the Battlefield 2 splash screen pops up but is completely white, then closes and no game related proccesses are found. There has been a bit of confusion in other forums about this screen, it is the very first screen that opens, the same screen that pops up when no disc is in drive. this is BEFORE the black screen before the game starts. 9 times out of 10, game doesn't load. If I am persistent, then eventually it will, maybe 1 in 10 times. when it is going to work, the BF2 screen doesn't show white, it shows with a picture, and game runs extremely well as far as i can tell.

What I have tried so far:
installed bf2 no patches, tried to run, it happened.
patched to 1.2, it happened
incremental to 1.21, it happened
installed sf, it happened.
manually uninstalled, went bf2, sf, 1.21 full, still happened.
tried using MS ide drivers instead of nforce4 ide drivers
installed MS Safedisc patch
installed macrovision safedisc patch
installed feb release of DX from MS
disabled movies files(renamed movies folders in bf and sf)
set refresh option in videodefault files to 1 from 0
have tried installing from friends DVD copy, using my key, install worked, game acted same way.
mounted mini image via DAEMON tools and renamed drivers, exact same symptoms.
at any point above where it would have made sense to reinstall the game, I have done so

I have searched high and low for a fix to this, planet bf2, total bf2, etc. It seems many folks have the problem or a similar problem, but no answers as far as fixing it goes. because the exact same symptoms are happening with mounted image as well as using original disc, that should eliminate safedisc or DVD drive from being the culprit, right?

Anyhow, longtime lurker, first time poster, any help would be appreciated.
 
Could it be a refresh rate setting? Perhaps a refresh rate force program? Or in the driver control panel? What res/settings are you trying to start/run BF2 in?
 
desktop is 1280x1024@85hz, trying to run game at same res. I don't use any refresh rate force programs, and also set monitor at 800x600@60hz and symptoms continued.
 
CRT. Viewsonic p95f+ supports 100hz @1280x1024

installed a second cd-rw to see if the drive was the issue, same symptoms. this seriously boggles me. my video card is 38 deg c, and proccessor is 28 c, hard drive 25c.

I am really at a loss as tow hat could be causing this, unless I have some crazy bios setting messed up. I'm not 100% familiar with pci-e and whether any changes need to be made or not.

patch...


happened to me several time out of the blue worked all them...
 
each time I made a change, this is what I did. manual uninstall, which includes removing registry keys, then i installed bf2, sf, then full patch 1.21. no luck at all
