BF2, again - inexplicable lockup

..on joining a server.

First game - fine, ran beautifully. Disconnected from that server, went to join another, and within 5 seconds of spawning, the game froze utterly. Wouldn't let me alt-tab, ctrl+alt+del, nothing.

I restarted, tried again, and the same thing happened.

I restarted again, looked through as many threads on BF2 crashes on as many forums as i could fin, looked on tweakguides, deleted my optimised shaders from the cache folder, tried again, and crashed.

I restarted and posted this.

What the hell is going on?

uninstall/reinstall. isn't that hard, only time is lost, not your profile or ranking points.

I am having a problem with BF2 and special forces locking up also. I find it only sometimes does it when I go to click "join game" or when something like a big c4 explosion happens right infront of me. But then its not really even a "true" lockup. It locks, but after a minute or so, the system returns to normal, with the exception of the connection being lost. I don't know what it could be.

Not to be funny but you forgot your mother's maiden name in your sig.

(ok, that was to be funny)

Well, thanks so far, but any more ideas?

I uninstalled, did a total system scan, spyware, virii, defragged, everything. reinstalled, the same issues and now on some servers my cursor won't move at the spawn menu.

I was playing it fine on another disk not two months ago, and this one is brand new... :(

Any issues in anything else?

Have you grabbed all your latest drivers?

Have you run prime and memtest?

A stab in the dark but...

Perhaps it could be a PunkBuster issue. Go to www.evenbalance.com and download the pbweb.exe file. Save it to your PB folder buried inside your BF2 program folder and run the file. It'll take a few minutes (and it looks like nothing is happening) but will eventually tell you it's done.

Like Rich said... drivers and updates. Do you overclock any of your hardware? Video card overclocks seem to be more trouble than CPU overclocks in BF2.

I can't believe I forgot this. Check those drivers and follow these instructions. This is usually the biggest problem in BF.

yup, for my GPU and copperhead :/

i've also tried re-downloading dX9.0c, and will just try PB as well. Thanks - i'll let you knwo how i get on...

EDIT: Sorry, but could you be a bit more specific re; PB - it's a little ambiguous and i don'twant to dick about with it unless i'm sure i'm getting the one i want
sorry

No joy :(

I've tried running it with xfire, firewalls, windowblinds & all other software off, but it still crashes. I've unblocked ports etc - is it possible that it's a faulty disc?

One more thing - one of my friends recommended i try reinstalling DX9.0c, which i downloaded, but i don't know where to install it to; will this help, and if so, where should i put it?

Just extract it to wherever you want and then run the setup.exe file within the extract. 9.0c is REQUIRED to play BF2. It prompts you to install 9.0c off the install CD as well.

yep. I think i can now say that i have actually tried everything. My specs are enough to run it at 1024x768 with everything on full with 4xAA, or were, a few months ago, my cooling is fine, i've reinstalled, patched, updated PB, reinstalled DX, scanned for virii, spyware, defragged, closed everything, from xfire to winblinds, updated graphics drivers, everything, and it still crashes. I had one server that i connected to and somehow didn't crash, despite it lagging like a whore (at a ping of 24, i might add  ), but i've nto been able to do this again.

Feel like reformatting?

BF2 is a buggy wench... But if it runs it's so awesome. If you've got the time you might as well do a fresh XP install. If it's a been a while you'll like the performance improvement. (gotta love the XP-bloatage)

Yeah, i was thinking about doing that - but if i do, i'm gonna have to wait until i buy a DVD-RW to backup my stuff :(

I might just get SF, as i was gonna anyway, and use the disc for that, as all these problems and lack of solutions point to a faulty disc imo - and i really can't be bothered to send the bastard thing back

Are you thinking a faulty disc while installing (i.e.: files were installed incorrectly or were party corrupt) or are you talking bad disc while playing? I think the game only reads the disc when starting and that's it. Buying SF ain't gonna fix yer problems. If anything it'll make them worse. lol I bought SF and it's a decent expansion but the SF maps have worse performance than the vanilla BF2 maps.

well, i'm gonna try and borrow a friend's to install from in that case, see if that did the trick.

Thanks, i didn't know that

That's a bummer man. Maybe it's Windowblinds. I'm not a big believer in the those kinds of add-ons. It once messed up my video divers a long time ago, and never again for me.

The game acts up on my occassionally as well. Mysterious crashes to desktop out of the blue. The freezeups during a big explosion mentioned above.

Hm. Sod what i said earlier - i've come to the conclusion that it's a memory issue. The initial stuttering at the start happens, as it does with most people; occasionally it'll pause for up to 4 or so seconds, and i'll come back. However, these lockups behave exactly the same, except i don't come back, even after 40 or so minutes.

I've also just found a text file in my BF2 docs called "memory" that wasn't there earlier. I opened it, and was given:

"********************************************************
* Memory Leaks *
********************************************************

Module # Bytes

********************************************************
* Max Memory Usage *
********************************************************

Module # Bytes"

Now, am i right in recalling a problme wiht earlier versions of the game with memory leaks? And is i possible that this has recurred despite the patch? I installed and played off a friend's disc to make sure there was nothign wrong with that, and it behaves exactly the same, and seeing as the crashes seem just like the initial stuttering but not coming back, with the sound repeating over & over etc, i dunno what to think.

Dude, only you are going to be able to sus this out in the end. That's a given. So you need to dig down deep and find the solution. Bottom line. ONly U.

Well, thanks for that.

In other news - i was wrong. RAM has nothing to do with it. The problem appears to be punkbuster.

I've just realised that this happens to me in Call of Duty, the original, in exactly the same way. I freeze up totally 5 seconds after starting. This might explain why i'm having issues in these games and not CoD2, which doesn't have PB, or CS:S. Can anyone think why? I've done the whole updatery-thing that WhyYouLoveMe suggested, both the pbweb.exe and the newer one. i really can't afford to reformat yet, but this is almost reducing me to tears. I just want to play BF2 properly, ohmyGAWD...
