BF1942 infinite loop problem?

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone can help me out, I have a frustrating problem.

My box is pretty old(see my sig), I plan on upgrading it soon, but I`ve had a problem playing BF1942 for the past 6 months+ (my favorite game).

When I play a game online, sometimes after 5 seconds,sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes never, the game would just freeze with the soundcard omitting a infinite high pitched screech. I can`t do anything apart from restarting the PC.

I have both XP and 2000 on my box, with BF1942 installed on both OS's. The problem occurs in both, and if I had to guess, its a little more stable in windows 2000.

I also have Doom 3 and HL2, I can play these through without a problem, no crashes, also my setup is stable with everyday stuff(surfing,emailing,etc).

I also used to have a geforce 3 before I installed my 9600pro(about 6 months-ish). The problem maybe connected to my new installed card, but as this crash is so intermitant, its hard to be sure.

Things I have tried:
Updated my ATI drivers from 4.10, to 5.4 to 5.6...still crashes.
lowered graphic/sound acceleration...still crashes.
Lowered BIOS settings(i.e. x2 agp speed, turn off fast writes, lower memory Spds,etc)..still crashes.
Updated punkbuster..still crashes.
Run driver cleaners and reinstalled BF1942...still crashes.
Checked CPU temps and left side case off...still crashes(my CPU temp never goes above 55C on a hot day).

Its very frustrating to fix as I`ll try something, and I maybe able to play for an hour or so and I`ll think its fixed, only to find the next time It`ll crash again. Sometimes I have to restart my PC 3 or 4 times just to play for 5 minutes...to crash again!

Possible culprits:
* Overheating Graphics card(not sure of this one as my card does`nt have a temp reader), and it crashes when my room is hot or cold anyway.
* Punkbuster has issues with certain setups
* This is the good old inifinte loop problem that plagued old via chipsets(but why only with bf1942?)

Sorry for the long post but this thing is driving me nuts!!

I'd say its most likely your sound card, a driver issue with it. What sound card are you using? Are you sure you have the latest drivers for it?
 
I want you to try going into your BIOS and turning off all hardware sound. You won't have any sound in game, but you will know for sure if it is the sound when it is disabled. If it still does it, it is something else.

I have an old SB Live! Not sure what drivers I have, probably quite old, an update would`nt hurt(I have a feeling they've not been updated for ages anyway!)

Thanks for the ideas peeps.

I just installed the lastest version(actually about 2003!) of the live drivers on the creative site, I just manged to play bf1942 for about an hour with no problems.I`m reserved wether or not this has fixed the prob, as I`ve been there many time before!

Stupid question, how come 2 of you thought this was soundcard/driver related?

I was thinking it was a chipset...game...video problem :confused:
 
Because in the last year I've fixed around 20 computer with the same problem.

Actually, its because of the infinite loop problem with the audio you stated and that you'd already did everything else you should have done. Came down to the sound card really.
 
Gutted...

I managed to play for 1 hour yesterday with no problems...so I was feeling like I might have finally fixed it...when I tried just now...same problem...

Any other ideas? :confused:
 
Sounds like a problem I was just having. I would get shut downs in games sometimes and sometimes Id get a loud screech afterwards. I had a ton of dust on my cpu fan/heatsink which was choking it. Removed all that crap and got a couple new fans and everything has been hunky dory since.
