well, im a headphone n00b. i live in the quiet hall in my dormatories (out of choise!) and i need some great headphones for gaming, and rock music. i have a limited budget (college student) so i dont want to spend more than 120$. right now i have some Koss Pro3AA titaniums, that are so uncomfortable i have resorted to playing games with the sound down very low. or off.

now this isnt a choose from a billion cans suggestion thread, i want to know about the beyerdynamic dtx 700, as the 900s cannot be found in the US (i looked for hours last night).

2 questions: 1) how do these compare to the Grado sr-60 / sr-80s, and 2)how do the grados, and the beyers, compare to the Koss's i already have?

now you can burn me at the stake if these questions have been asked before, but no information comes up for the beyer dtx 700's.

You asked us not suggest any other headphones. I have some opinions about how I'd build a headrig for $120.
 
I'm afraid I cannot tell you how they compare to the Grados (I've never heard them), but I recently bought the DTX 800s (I live in Australia).

If you want them for gaming, the Beyers are a very good choice. The bass is excellent, and doesn't overwhelm the mids or highs. I recently played through Doom3 again with these cans, and the you could actually feel the gunshots and creepy music. Very nice indeed.

Of course, I am biased, as I am still in the grip of possessive pride :)

You also mentioned you live in quiet halls. The Beyers are very quiet. I played loud music with them off and it was barely audible. Because they are closed, they also serve to dampen a fair amount of outside noise.

Though I don't know how they compare to the Grado's, the Overclockers Australia forums almost unanimously recommend the Beyerdynamics for gamers on a budget. I hope this is helpful.
