I'll be getting the ATH-a900s when my wallet becomes less thin. And head over to www.headfi.com to look at all their gear and drool all over it then go waste all your money on headphones/amps/etc. :)

When I heard them unamped, I did not think they were worth the money, especially after hearing some of the other headphones in the same range.

I believe there are -250 and -80 versions that perform differently

Like most high end head-phones the regular dt770s are high resistance and NEED to be amped, so if you don't already own an amp you have to factor that into the cost, it's unfair to judge them unamped, it's like watching HD video on a regular TV and complaining that you can't see a difference.

There is a low resistance 80ohm version which doesn't need an amp to sound good.
 
well, i cant really get an amp atm ...so do the ATH-a900s need a amp to sound good?

The phones in the link are the 80 ohm version, they don't need an amp, but it would make a difference.
 
From reading various reviews of the a900s they sound just fine unamped, but just like most high end headphones they will sound even better with one. Between the beyers and the ATs the AT's will probably sound much better unamped than the beyers.
 
how much do amps cost? well, a good one?

and with the same amp, what one would sound better? the ath-a900s or the dt770s?

i figured i would get an amp later anyways. im not much of a audiophile so i could probably wait a while and use them without a amp.
 
That depends on how you define better. ;)

I would consider the ATH-A900s to be much more rounded but there is no denying the fact that the DT770s are the king of bass. :D

i mean would buying an amp make the sound good enough to justify the price?

I have heard a number of impressions of folks that love and hate them for games. It seems to boil down to two primary camps:

-soundstage, sound position - A900s
-bass impact, immersion - DT770s

It also seems that the folks talking about the A900s were mainly talking in reference to on-line play and the DT770s playing off-line

I would bet you would be fine either way. Some on-line stores allow you to return them within a short period if you hate them or if you pick up a good pair used, you should be able to sell them for about the same price if you hate them.

On the amp, personally I would say yes but I would start out with a sub $100 ($30-$70) amp either build or find a builder.
 
I've owned 770-80s and A900s at the same time. A900s win in every area. The 770s have louder, stronger bass, but the A900s bass is more accurate. The treble's less veiled too, and they're much more comfortable. I sold the 770s and kept the 900s.

And what differance does an amp have?
(i can't answer that question cause I am not exactly unbiased)
 
OT post, hey Mister X we should get that headphonesreview stickied somewhere. Great site. Once I build my headphones collection I could add some stuff to it. For now all I have is some Sennheiser HD497's and some Senn PC150's on the way for gaming/chatting. I vote for a sticky! :)

hey x or commando, how would you rate the soundstage and the bass of the 770pro vs the 880s? I'm talking amped of course (either ppa or woo1 type amp). I ask because I was told these are similar enough that I won't be too disapointed, yet they have much larger bass, which would lend itself well to certain situations. I have looked at grados, but cant get over the feel, so would the 770 be a reasonable compromise? (I own dt880s atm, so by compromise I know I'll loose a bit of quality, but will I gain the bass?)
 
are their any stores that would be likely to carry these 2 headphones to see for myself how they sound?

would stores like mediplay or bestbuy have them? i dont think they will but i dont know of any stores in my area that specialize in this kind of stuff

the a900s seem to be winning for me but i dont know unless i hear them first hand.
 
Nah, you there are other sites that carry the ATs but none cheaper than Audiocubes in the US. The mark up for the other sites is pretty steep. But I don't think you are going to have any luck finding a brick and mortar store with A900s.

A pair just sold for used at Headfi but were bought in the same day. Used they go like hotcakes. So, look at it this way. If you don't like them you won't lose more than say 50 or less on resell.

As for the DT770s at lot of guitar/music shops carry them so trying them out shouldn't be that hard. Just make some calls in your home town.
