So i went and bought one.

Nothing but a severe pain in the ass so far.

The device itself is awesome.

It's the zune software, it's exactly as if microsoft did ZERO testing and debugging on it.
Think windows ME bad.
It freezes outright whenever you try to sync anything to the device, etc.

Aside from the bugs though, the UI of the software itself is better than Itunes imo.
A patch or two and this thing could shine.
 
So... um, the instant you installed the zune software, didnt it update the firmware to Version 1.1 (322) ? It did for me.

Audio is pretty damn good for standard earbuds even though they are a lil big in the ear canal for my taste.

As far as after installing it, I sync'd 1,500 songs (about 20GB) and a few hundred MB of videos at once. It never crashed, locked, or even paused at any time.
 
I figured out it works ok in manual sync mode, but the auto sync crashes the software at 1 or 2%.

This device really could be an ipod killer once they fix the problems with it.

Another problem with the sync software, it doesn't support 99% of videos on my HDD cause they're all dixv or xvid. Granted MS never embraced these codecs anyway (360?), but if only they implemented FFDshow as the converter they'd have pretty universal support.
 
No offense, but it could well be you have some system specific issues that are causing your problems, and none of them may be the result of Zune software. This is all speculative, and imo it's a bit irresponsible to create a thread titled 'Beware of Zune' without any comparisons or research to back it up.

I don't have any ipod experience, but I'm guessing Apple doesn't readily accept divx either? If Divx compatibility isn't an advertised feature, I wouldn't classify it as a 'problem'. Given the fact you were previously aware of MS's atitude towards divx, it seems odd you'd be so surprised. A desired feature, perhaps... a problem, no.
 
fresh install of XP pro (last week), fairly standard hardware with all the latest drivers, (gigabyte ds3/core 2/chaintech av-710)

And while i'm not stunned MS released beta software to the public, it's still not a good sign.

The device itself though, works fantastic with a great UI and awesome sound quality.

ALL software is beta these days :eek: Heck, it's getting to the point where if the firmware doesn't contain virii you're lucky.

Just like any hardware, the 1st thing to do before you install stuff is to check for updates... Post #3 seems to indicate the Zune is quite capable of operating correctly...
 
I just played with one at Office Depot while getting supplies for the office....kinda neat

Wow, that was a review? He didn't cover any feature even mention anything about the product other than complain. The closest thing he did was say how it was twice the size of the ipod, which it's not.
 
My Zen Vision M accepts (w/o conversion) all of my Xvid and Dvix files, excepting those having the AC3 (digital dolby) surround sound codec. The sound with a good set of ear plugs can't be beat by I-Poo. So, why do we need the Zune?
 
Because people like me put a hex on Creative's colon for the way they treat their customers and we want alternatives!
 
My HP-120 Iriver finally bit the dust last month, the internal hard drive has apparently come loose. This player was amazing and no i-pod could touch it.

Sad to see it go... got many years out of it.

So now I'm considering a Zune as a replacement. I don't need more than 12 hours of playtime and watching videos (except for showing off ones of my daughter) aren't really a deciding factor. So the Zune looks pretty good to me.

However, there is one thing that I'm aprehensive about. The software. I never used the Iriver software, I always treated it like a removeable hard drive. I have thousands of personally ripped MP3's on my system. I don't know if the Zune software will sync with them or not. I haven't read any review or comment that alludes to how Zune deals with non-zune downloaded mp3's or whether you can direct access the Zune itself.

That's the dealbreaker for me right there. Any thoughts?
 
I didn't have any problems with my non-Zune content (a wide array of previously ripped CDs and some random songs from elsewhere...) and one shouldn't have any problems with MP3s. However, to be on the safe side, you can download their software (from zune.net) and try importing your media into it. If it can be imported into the Zune library, it can be synched to the player. Then, once you're happy with the software and the library, you can take the plunge and try the hardware.

For the second question: at this time, it can only be accessed in the Zune software as far as I know. However, I'm sure someone will come up with some sort of workaround down the road (if nothing else, similar to what Red Chair software has done for various players).

Auto-synch worked like a charm.

Same here. Installed the CD, followed the steps durring installation, connected Zune, Sync'd my library automatically, no errors. 25GB of music transfered in about 30ish min. Much faster than my Zen Micro ever did.
