just got my NEC 17" Multisync FE771 with superbright mode (black) delivered by UPS. This is what i got

Look at the stand, it is dented in part of the bottom frame, im not even turning it on. the box was thrashed and packaging torn apart on the inside if you view the gallery. It looks like it had been dropped, or fell out of the box. the delivery guy looks like it opened up and they tried to retape it.

a gallery of images can be found on

I emailed the seller, and i did purchase insurance, how would i go about getting some sort of a refund? thanks in advance

Crappy..I suggest resizing that pic first..and resizing the ones in the gallery..Im on 2mb Cable and it still takes forever to load...

I feel sorry for you guy, but shit, how many of these threads do we need? This is bound to turn into a UPS sucks, ship fedex, no fedex sucks, ship UPS thread, just like all of them. If you have insurance and the product was damaged during shipment, then logically shouldn't you call UPS? That's about the best answer we can give you. And that is a HUGE picture. I think some cropping/resizing would be good.

found the online forms to report damaged packages, must have been hiding from my rage. thanks for the release

Much better. I can actually tell what I'm looking at now. :D

Contact your credit card company.

If it shows up in that condition, let the company and UPS be accountable, get your money back, and purchase through a different retailer.

Something is wrong on some end, there, and you shouldn't be out a monitor on account of it.

Looks like you got a open box item. I bet that box was previously used. I talk to our veteran UPS driver a lot (15years)an they hardly ever get boxes like that. Our district stores send stuff to each other all the time in previously used boxes and they look just like that.

Id be after the sender and UPS.

Ummm.. I don't think that was UPS' fault entirely.

I'd contact the seller about it. Was the monitor stand attached when you unpacked it!?!

That's a HUGE no no when you're packing monitors. The stands will always, always break.

the stand was attached, but this box was assaulted before it got here, scuff marks from foam hitting cardboard, foam completely crushed. but either way, im gettin some sort of refund either from UPS or from the seller. i filed a damaged package report, ill post what happens from here.

I dont claim to be a detective but those feet on the stand look hella dirty for it to be a new monitor. I think you got hosed.

too bad you didnt get a box with different packing material. i bought 2 of the same monitors from frys electronics which are sitting in front of me now. one thing i noticed was the two boxes had two different packaging styles. one hard styrofoam like in your pictures and one with custom mold fitting styrofoam. seems like the form fitting styrofoam would be better but that doesnt really help your situation now. ive seen this before, ill definetely think twice about shipping fragile equipment through UPS now. bummer man. :(

edit: god damn, after looking at all your pics that monitor went through hell and back.

Unless it's in original packaging. I seem to remember when I got my sony it had the stand attached, but the monitor was held in place by foam all around it.

His monitor looks to have been packaged the same as my Multisync FP912. The original packaging does have the monitor with the stand attached, and then it's placed in a plastic bag and the monitor is held in place by the styrofoam supporters.

I'd suggest a call to UPS. They delivered my monitor too, but it didn't come wrecked like that (thankfully).

The seller replied back to my email and assured me it wasnt shipped that way, maybe i should have calmed down before emailing him. he also asked me to test it, so i did. It is in fact a dead monitor, it turns on, but wont pick up video at all (on 3 different pc's) the power button is also partly stuck with the pastic around the button being cracked. The buttons on the monitor also do not work along with making some electronical sounds when i pressed them, convincing me that I should unplug it immediatly and throw it back in the box (ups style).

Has anyone purchased from Monitors Direct? They seem to have a wonderful "damaged in shipping policy" that states something like it was THEIR problem and they would ship a replacement and deal with the carrier. Just wondering if anyone has had to try out that policy. I am looking at buying a monitor and have hedged fearing what happened to this poor monitor. Shipping damage is unfortunately a reality, especially with heavy, bulky stuff. A carrier I always had good luck with is RPS. Unfortunately not many places offer them as an options. Hope your replacement arrives intact.

ack, got the monitor picked up today for investigation, but they said i should have had the seller file the claim instead. the seller also said that usually the seller files it as well. am i in trouble here?

I work at UPS as a sorter. I'm not sure if all UPS facilities are like mine but we don't use brown colored tape. We have our own UPS brand tapes that are clear colored. With that logic, the store you bought it from MIGHT have taped it like that in your picture.

I'm sure that UPS is gonna blame the store for not packing it correctly and the store is gonna blame UPS for damaging it. The truth is, you probably will never know who's fault it really is. Hell, it was probably both the store and UPS's fault. Having said that, I know you are angry, but try to take it easy on whomever you are talking to. Talking in a calm tone usually gets better results than yelling at the person at the other line, unless you know they are dicking you around :p. I've heard that it takes a while for UPS to settle claims, but I might be wrong. good luck to you.

I suddently recall that Seinfeld episode about where he had to go through interigations to get a refund on his broken stereo at the post office :) . Hopefully you won't have to go through that.

Well, that sucks, but at least you took photos of how it arrived and such, so you have something in your favor. But asking the seller, I don't think he'd say that's exactly how it was when he packed it if he actually did. There's no way to know though.

What did you say to the delivery guy when he dropped it off?

I hate to say this but anything packaged correctly won't arrive like that. UPS doesn't have the time or want to tote your package through the system. It's gets INJECTED and abused. Either package for it or hand deliver it.

BTW we ship millions of dollars of industrial controls through my office and I can't remember the last time someone called and said something was damaged.

If you can't drop the box 5 feet on cement and have it survive it's not packaged right.

Five feet is both fucking high and an insane requirement. You try packaging a heavy ass monitor safe enough to drop it like that if you dont have the capacity to create proper perfect foam packaging as well as having a shitload of supplies.

Either way, this guy should demand a refund from the seller and tell him to deal with it.

Yeah, incorrectly packaged items (not enough tape, thin box, heavy items shifting in box) will cause your box to break open when it's being lifted. It will probably be lifted by 6+ employees by the time it reaches your hands, depending on how far it's being shipped. If it's going across the U.S., then the package will probably be touched by 30+ employees.

Tips for those shipping anything: Double tape (more if the item is heavy), sturdy box (no shoe boxes!), and if your item is rolling around in the box secure it with some newspaper so that your box won't roll off some of our conveyor belts that are at an incline.

All my packages can easily survive that.. I ship 70+ lb packages all the time. Go to a UPS hub and watch them throw them then tell me 5 feet is insane.

Also if you don't have the proper packaging then you shouldn't be shipping it. No excuse. A heavy weight box isn't much more expensive then a regular shit box that a lot of people use.

this is why i buy monitors from brick and mortar stores so i can pick and choose my box i recieve

I worked with a dude that was a UPS part timer in the evening. He said the more Fragile and Insured stickers you put on a box, the worse it got treated.

And if it shows up beat up, don't sign for it. Check out the contents first for obvious damage. If the driver doesn't want to wait, (s)he can take it back. Don't give them the signature unless it's in acceptable shape. If they leave it without a signature and it's damaged, you may have an easier time with the claim. Unfortunately UPS is good for leaving shit without getting signatures. Fed Ex won't leave anything without one at my place.

And only the new hires throw stuff 5 feet. The experienced guys can heave a 19" monitor 12-15 feet no sweat.
