My main watercooled pc died about a week ago, after I finally dissassembled it I found what had caused the motherboard to fry so soon.

There are a couple capacitors really close to the retention frame. Because of the amount of force the springs were supplying the pins managed to poke through the sticky black insulator on the backing plate and make contact with the metal underneath.

The holes.

Here are the caps that caused this.

The solution? Well once my RMA comes in I'm going to use a pair of nail clippers and chop off the ends of the pins. Easy fix if youre observant enough to see it before your board fries.

That is not good...... Hopefully they come out with mounting hardware that does not cut into the traces.

i wouldnt say its illegally, b/c epox should have took into consideration the backplate for any HSF kits

It is illegal. Using anything other than stock cooling and changing out parts (including backplate) is considered a modification and nulls your warranty. Look before you leap.

Crap... I dunno if I should really feel bad. I wrote what happened in my RMA request and they approved it. :( I should have my new board monday.

I am hell on bogus RMAs, but this one is ok

those backing plates are specifically approved by AMD and we buy them directly from the mfgr
- if the plate/mobo have a problem it is a valid RMA

note that the AMD specs permit 90 lbf, the Swiftech load is about half that (too much bending @ 90 lbf)

Uhm, thats a crock of BS. There is no clause .. for any board manufacturer that states that only stock cooling is to be used ... if this were the case, the board wouldn't come with mounting holes, DUH! In fact having spoken to AMD directly, they have told me that any HSF less then 500g is approved by them. You're claim would put every HSF manufacturer out of business pretty quickly.

As long as you were straight with them and they accepted it good for them.

That's what counts.... Just as long as you told them what happened, not something like "my board died after 2 minutes" ....

So I finally got my pc up and running again. What a nightmare... I dropped the new Epox board in and powered it up just to see my favorite constant FF on the debug 7segs. I tried swapping out a few components but it was pretty obvious it wasn't going to post for me.

Next step was to replace the CPU. Because of some fiasco I had with Frozen CPU the 30 day OEM warranty was long since expired. Which means this little blunder ended up costing me another 200 dollars. I went with a Newcastle 3200+ it's fast as hell.

Also... one of my sticks of ram went bad somehow.

*sigh*

No, Cricket still has that shuttle board and I haven't seen him since QuakeCon. He wants to test the old proc in it to see if it works.
