I found this thread over at the XtremeSystems forums.

Now that the ambient temp here is about 60F, my CPU (mobile Athlon XP 2600+ at 133 * 19, 1.9v) idles at 42C. It hits 48 while priming and 51 while running CPUburn.

Running the program linked to in that thread, my CPU errors out within 10 seconds. If I disable safe mode within the program and let it run and accumulate errors, it hits 53C. Yesterday when my room was about 80F, my CPU would hit 58C while priming and not error for as long as I ran it (half an hour). So I guess this is a lot more stringent.


Well. I upped it to 1.93v and ran the program again. WIthin 30 seconds my computer shut off. I have the BIOS set to shut it down if the CPU hits 75C, but it didn't get that high.
I'm gonna try it now at 133 * 18 at 1.9v.....
 
that's a beast of a program. got my cpu uo to 56°c whereas prime only got it to 50° at it's worst after hours and hours. Made it through w/o any errors though. Winchester A64 3200+ @ 2.63 ghz 1.65v
 
I have found that it is better for finding max temp, but not as good for finding errors. The hardware is different though, so maybe it depends on the platform. I am using a A64 on a Nforce 3 board. I can pass the S&M and fail prime within 3hrs near the borderline OC's. I have read about A64 having problems with prime, but mine will run it 24+ hrs up to 2500MHZ so I know its the OC in my case at least.
 
S&M gets my mobile barton a couple degrees hotter that Pime does, but it doesn't get it any hotter than CPUburn/burnK7.

And for those of us that haven't seen any real reason to switch from 98SE to XP, S&M has another problem - it leaks. After a couple minutes (whether the tests are running or not), it uses up all the GDI resources and everything goes funky until you kill the stupid program.
