I'm doing some planning and research on my home network and i'm now where I need to pick up a wireless USB adapter. The reason I want a USB adapter is versatility so I can plug it in my laptop or desktop or any other device when I need to place it somewhere not close to one of my wired outlets. For this reason, forget about pci or pcmcia cards...

I'm ordering either a Netgear WG102 or WG302 AP (no question asked, I'll take either one and hook it to my IPCop server) so I need something who can work reliably, has all the needed encryptions like WPA2 and is well priced.

shoot your suggestions :)

P.S. : When it come to wireless stuff, I'm a bit of a n00b but I did some research for the AP and decided on those (matter of price and luck in feeBay) since I don't need the switch part and don't need the router features.

Seems nobody has a clue in this case ?

There is NONE.... USB adapters suck! :p

If you say adapters sucks, then I'm struck buying a pcmcia card and a pci card (the main reason for going usb)... Any advice on those cards ?

the wusb54g is good by linksys.
I ran netstumbler and i could pick up 9 diffrent access points in my room.

Youv'e obviously never used the one I do. (Zonet ZEW2501)
http://www.amazon.com/Zonet-ZEW2500.../ref=sr_1_12/104-9333947-7911108?ie=UTF8&s=pc

I think it performs pretty damn well for the price (I've bought two from other sites for $12 AR), and I can game on it with pings in the sub-40s. Using a WGR54GL with DD-WRT placed in the living room of our apartment.

Considering the fact that we're on 3mb/256k cable, and one of my roommates is torrenting, I think it does pretty well.

That's one of the nice suggestions I wanted to hear...

Actually, I'm not looking to get the "fastest" or "best" adapter, but a good adapter who can work well in most situations and has no quirks when it come with drivers for both desktop and laptop applications. My house has outlets in each room, even 2 in some rooms so there is always a outlet nearby to plug. The wireless adapter is only useful if I go outdoor (no need to make a outlet outside when anyone can hack in my inner network) or if i wanted some temporary setup out of reach of a outlet.

I rarely do torrents or big downloads but when I do, i always do it on my main pc anyway.

The one I linked doesn't do WPA2, at least not that I know of, I hadn't caught that in your original post. We use WPA.

Don't get a Motorola WU830G. End of story.

Drivers = buggy, random BSOD. :(

Well you asked for the best...

If you want just a dependable one any major brands will do...
