best wireless router?

what's your goto router? Its going to be used for a home network. i will have a desktop hardwired and a laptop for the wireless.
 
Personnally, I use a Netgear WG302 wireless access point (no builtin router) connected to a Endian firewall box acting as a router/firewall. It has 2 5dbi antennas and it's a business model i got from eBay for 30$. It's working nicely and is very robust with the metal encasing.
 
After doing a ton of research over the last 2 weeks so I could replace mine, taking into account:

1. Wan-To-Lan thru-put (important for high-speed cable connections and FIOS).
2. Full-featured Firmware.
3. Reasonable ease of use.
4. Dependability.
5. Features (i.e. Gigabit Ethernet).
6. Wireless G performance, without gimmicks or non-standard scheme's.

I chose the DLink DGL-4300.

Based on your intended use, I would recommend not spending a whole bunch of $$$.

Get a Buffalo WHR-G54S for < $50 bucks and you'll be happy! It's a stable, cheap router with all of the features that you'll need and it's DD-WRT upgradeable if you choose to go that route.

I've got one with 4 wired PC's and a wireless laptop and for Home use it can't be beat! Way more stable that my Linksys, this thing never drops a connection.

It isn't gigabit, but it will be faster than your internet connection and you'll be able to transfer files across you're network (wireless G and 1 wired) at the max of you're G hardware anyway.

I've got 100% signal and 54mbps connection throughout my house and even into my garage. I've used it a total of about 50 feet away. Occasionaly the connection speed will drop to 48Mbps or even a couple of times 36Mbps but I'll go an check it again and it's back to 54Mbps.

I've got a lappy with a 6GB hard drive so I've got iTunes pointing to a shared directory (9GB) on one of my wired machines. Plays the songs fine and dandy, never a hitch or hiccup.

In the admin interface it keeps a running total of dropped packets and I've had 0 on the wired or wireless for the month I've been using it. Also haven't had to power cycle it yet. I had a linksys that I had to power cycle almost daily.

I would go with a Netgear RangeMax, or their Draft-N Gigabyte Router

The reason I didn't recommend any of the more expensive, faster routers is because with 1 wired and 1 wireless you can't transfer any faster than the G card in the lappy. You'll have gigabit capability and no use for it at all.

I just started using a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 flashed with DD-WRT and can't be happier. Until now I've been using a Linksys WRT54GS, and it did pretty good but would still drop packets and occasionally drop the connection altogether. I'd highly recommend Buffalo's products - for the price they can't be beat!

I run a similar setup. Prosafe wg302 + nokia ip330 running smoothwall.
