Best way to record from 3.5mm input

Looking for a good piece of software (preferably freeware) to just do a quality recording from a 3.5mm input on my laptop.

Is there a better method to record audio into a laptop than using the RCA to 3.5mm mic input on my laptop? I'd be willing to spend up to 50 dollars if the recording solution has a drastic improvement in recording quality.

Just looking to record a 2 hour jam session about once a week, thanks!
 
laptop is a toshiba l505-s5984 , 09' black friday special
intel c2d 2.1ghz, 4gb ram

has anyone noticed the new z-5500s don't have the weighted knob anymore?
