Best way to make video tutorials/screencasts?

There are, to my knowledge, 2 ways to make a video tutorial for sure:
1. Use a screen recording program like Camtasia (costs money) or CamStudio (free and full of crap)

2. Use a hardware screen capture card.

There is possible a 3rd way, hopefully someone here can verify:

3. Use a camcorder

I am not interested in option 1. I have used every freeware/open source screen recording program out there. They have all failed, or been filled with garbage, or simply not worked. I have the machine for the work now, but the software is all garbage, unless I want to pay for a program. I am unwilling to do that, because there is no guarantee the program I pay for and install today will work a year from now. So I am kicking out option number 1, please don't even refer to it in this thread. I have over a decade of experience in this subject. The likelihood you know something I don't is very slim.

That leaves options 2 and 3. Most of the screen capture cards have poor ratings and cost $100.00, last time I checked. I am still open for suggestions here, I have a fairly current mobo with a few extra PCI slots.

I know there used to be some USB devices, and I do have USB 3.0 support, so I am also open to anything in that area. Basically, if you have used and loved some sort of screen capturing hardware using Windows 7 64-bit please post here with links and tell me about it.

I am even more curious about option 3, or the possible option 3. Video cameras can be cheaper than software or hardware. But does a video camera exist that can input HDMI, DVI or computer monitor RGB output and record the video? This is what I do not know. Does such a feature exist in a video camera, and if so, what is it called? If you can tell me about this, perhaps provide vc recommendations, I would appreciate it!

Please let me know what my hardware options are for making video tutorials. Thank you!
