I am currently using the family PC and working on getting the money for my own PC. Once I have my PC, I want to be able to have internet on both of the computers. The family PC is about 3 - 4 years old. I don't think it has USB 2.0 and I think the PCI slots are 2.1. I was going to take the cable modem we have now and put it in my room, then buy a wireless router and have it be wireless to the family PC. On Newegg most of their PCI WiFi Network adapters don't say if they are compatible with PCI 2.1. So if I get a USB 1.0 adapter will it slow down the speed at all? The two rooms are about 30 feet away and 3 - 4 walls away.
Would buying another cable modem be a smarter idea? I don't really need to have a home network. Is there any easy way to find out which versions of PCI and USB I have?
Thanks for the help.
