best way to cool down hdd

It doesn't take alot of air flow to cool a drive. I have some 3 10k drive in open bays on my system with 2 exhaust fans in back, 80mm. The air they are pushing out of the case comes in past the drives and cools them just fine.

diogo - I'm curious. What kind of drives do you have? Have you looked to see how much power they draw?

The heat from hard disks goes out the sides anyway, where the things screw into whatever holding device it's contained in. Ever looked at a Raptor or SCSI disk? Notice where all of the surface area is?

Get the 120mm since it will for a fact spin slower and push more air than that 80mm. A whiny 80mm fan is something you don't want to hear.

I have a wd2500ks, which seems to run really hot (several ppl here have experienced that.)

If you get a good silent 80mm fan that should be more than enough air flow to cool 2-3 drives. You won't need 120.

I've come to the conclusion that my HD is misreporting the temperature. I have a 120mm blowing on it right now, and even though it feels relatively cool to the touch, it is still reporting a temperature of 58C.I want to use a thermometer to confirm my suspicions. I should use it to measure the temp. of which part of the hd?

The sides are where the heat is dissipated; check there for concerns about the drive's health. But the sensor is in a chip on the bottom; check that to see how accurate the sensor is. You'll probably want to use something thermally conductive to hold the thermometer in place so you get better readings. If you've got the cheap thermal goop that came with your heatsink, use a little of that.

Yeah but the price you pay for a good 80mm you can get a medeocre 120mm and push more air. Even the Vantec stealths don't move as much air as a single 120MM does and they have almost the same noise level.

just as I imagined. The reported value is off by about 20c. The hdd reports 60 but is actually closer to 38.

use an IR thermometer, that would be easiest! I use thing thign for all sorts of stuff. Radio Shack actualy makes a good one it has the same internal parts as ones that sell in the $100+ range and they go on sale for $30 all the time. The difference being there is no laser pointer attached to the radio shack one.
