Best volume settings?

i was just curious if there is an optimal balance for volume settings(ie volume in windows/music software and volume setting in my audio console whcih is a Logitech Z-680) such that the sound quality is least distorted.
also, i have a sounblaster live! 5.1 sounds card

i guess start at 100 and slowly turn it down the mixer till the sound isnt distorted anymore

make sure you are using high quality material to test with
