I received a $100 Promotional Gift Card from New Egg during one of the Holiday Season promotions. I would like to upgrade my video card. I am currently running a GeForce 9600 GT that has a noisy fan problem that sometimes overheats.

I'd like to spend a max of $150 on this upgrade, $100 from the gift card and $50 of my own money. Since the gift card is from New Egg, I am limited to special deals there.

One more thing, my current power supply is a BFG 450watt PSU - which ever video card I get would hopefully run on this same PSU so that I do not have to upgrade that as well.

The only deal I know of right now is the MSI GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) that is going for $170 down to 150 after a MIR.

I do not prefer ATI or Nvidia, I just want the best deal for my $150.

I am checking in with these forums because the last time I purchased a video card without seeking advice I ended up spending money on a video card that was not an actual upgrade at all.

6850 is much better, I have both a GTX460 and 6850, both are excellent cards, but with your PSU, I'd go with a 6850 (it only needs one PCI-e power cable, therefore less power needed).
 
+1 more for HD6850. A much better card, and usually slightly cheaper than the 460.
 
The 6850 is a huge upgrade in many aspects. dx11, better performance for what may end up being very similar power draw, eyefinity support and most likely much more VRAM.
 
The 6850 is not a "much better card" than the 1GB GTX 460 you have posted in the OP. They're pretty similar in terms of performance, power draw, and noise output. The GTX 460 takes around 20W more power under load.

However, given the PSU in the OP, I would also recommend the 6850 just to have some extra headroom in terms of power.
 
It's more of a 40-45W difference in power, and the HD6850 is a step up from the GTX460 1GB, though not a very big one.

Hope yours is issue free. If I realised the 6850 being recommended was Sapphire I would have spoken out against it. Sapphire stuff is typically pretty bad. Ah well, good luck!
 
I'm wondering HD6850 vs 460GTX when it comes to adding in Anti-Alias. I could run games with AAx2 & x4 with GTX260-216 but same games with no AA using HD4870/4890. 460GTX is awesome performer even after adding AA. How is the 6850 ?

I agree, they're remarkably neck and neck in most respects, with the 460 allegedly overclocking better(not that useful if you don't OC) and the 6850 consuming less power(not a huge issue for a lot of people here it seems like). You should go with price on this one, which means that given how pricing is currently, it's probably the 6850 for you as many have said.

Nah just like any other company you never know. My Saphire 9700 pro is still living its in my dad's comp he plays BF 1942 almost daily since it came out lol
 
I can't remember he lives in Florida now. I got it around release so probably.
 
They're terribad. I don't know anyone IRL who's had a sapphire non-ref card that's worked, at all. There've been a dozen or so cards in that test group, all either DOA or short-term failure, their quality control is appalling (well, non-existant really).

Yeah you wouldnt be the first guy I've seen talk about Sapphire having some issues lately.

Doh! I really hope that the Sapphire card is not an issue. I read the reviews on newegg and 78% of them were all five-egg ratings so I thought it was a good purchase.

If I do run into any issues, I'll be sure to post here about it...
