My P4 system has been dragging recently so it reminded me that it's time to do an overhaul, my only question is, is now the right time to do so? I've been primarily looking at an E6550 because the price is right and despite the low multi, it looks like most are getting really nice OCs from these chips. The only thing is though, with Wolfdale on its way, I'm wondering if the Conroe and Yorkfield prices will drop once Wolfdale is released. Do you guys forsee Q6600 prices dropping below $200 or E6550s (Used) dropping to around $100 anytime soon?

You might be able to score a used Q6600 for $200 after the Penryn Quads come out, which is Feb/Mar, but probably not before then. Personally, this close to the Duals coming out - next week - I'd wait and grab an E8400.
 
When was the last time you:
defragged?
virus scanned?
reformatted?
replaced the hard drive?

theres no reason for a system to start dragging, aside from software problems and/or bitrot. Hard drives are actually constantly writing inconsistencies to themselves. Literally a single platter can have millions of corrupt bits on it. Windows registry system is horribly bad (and was something I was REALLY hoping microsoft would remove with vista, but, a replacement would really change windows at a core level, breaking everything).
 
I actually defrag all my HDs about twice a week and I have virus scan set to scan twice a week as well. I also just reinstalled my OS this past December so it should be ok but everything is just old. The biggest problem though, is that I cloned over to my new Raptor last week and my pc has been giving me lag problems ever since. Since I'm going to have to install my OS again anyway, I figure I mine as well just do the overhaul that I've been planning for a while. I'm really lazy so it kills me every time I have to do a fresh install and reinstall all my programs and updates and settings.
 
Backup all your documents and format your hdd and reinstall windows. It's like a mini-upgrade :)

If things are still slow, then I would upgrade.

My Athlon 1.4Ghz backup pc was far too slow to even surf. This was on XP SP2. On win98 it was very fast but my wireless wouldn't work. Ergo, I upgraded :)
 
Thanks for the help guys, figured out what the problem was. The Raptor failed every drive fitness test I ran it through and yesterday when I booted up, the SMART reading said the drive was bad and needed to be replaced. :( Sucks since I just got shipped this drive as a replacement for my 36gb that died. Hopefully they'll ship my advance rma out in less than 30days this time around. :mad:
