Best Tablet

Arggh. What's taking HP so long for the refresh. I want a Core i3 powered tm2t now .:(

Yeah, those Gateways just weren't well built. As I mentioned earlier the new base model is available in the US, the tm2-2050us, but I imagine you want the i5 and HD 5450, hopefully the customize units will show up in the nex few days. I'm thinking about upgrading my unit depending on what feedback I hear. The new base model is still slower than mine so it's of no intrest to me.

im guessing they will focus on the 2740p production first ;P all those i5 parts are probably heading there, they get more money outta ya from those ;P

i'm hoping the build quality is what all the reviews ive read say it is......my 1521(love the thing), has both hinges broken....to be fair though it was accidentally dropped off the trunk of my car(a miata, free so stfu :p ), i need a dam rugged machine to last 4 years :)

on the shared notebook feature, yup, knew about it, never used it since OneNote fails at note taking on a standard laptop :)

The 2470 uses standard voltage CPUs intead of the CULVs so they don't share that part. OneNote works fine on a non-tablet device. I use it on my desktops as much as my tablets but the ink as a WHOLE other dimension for sure.

I agree, Onenote is excellent even on desktop machines. I used it a lot when researching proposals at work. It's great for organizing all those specs, quotes, and info. It just gets even better with a Pen Based Tablet.

The Business HP tablet looks nice too. What is the whole "Slice" thing about?

As I said, I love my TM2, there are a few very minor things I wish were different though.

- The fingerprint reader works very well, much better than the TX2 reader, but in low lighting, It's hard to tell where it is. I wish the reader was a bit more visible. I never really used the reader on the TX2, but The change of position and the much more reliable reader makes it actually desirable to use.

- I microphone jack would be useful as well. I'd rather use a headset with a mic rather than the laptop's mic. It's not the end of the world, I just would rather use one of my existing headsets rather thatn getting a new USB one.

- I wish the displays orientation would automatically rotate when placed in tablet mode. The TX2 did. Considering it rotates back when in laptop mode, I can't understand why it doesn't do it the other way around.

I was worried about the lack of a PC Card slot, but then again, I never used it on the TX2, the remote always stayed in that slot instead.

I thought about getting the external DVD drive, but I have one already. It's just not as compact. But, I usually carted the TX2 around with the DVD blank.

The glossy screen was another thing I was leary about. Right now, I actually prefer it to the mat screen on the TX2. It doesn't pick up smudging and prints much worse than the TX2 does and the surface is flush to the frame and much smoother. The net result is a much smother and regular righting surface that feels better and more responsive to me. In laptop mode, I think the glossy screen looks better too.

For a tablet that cost me $900, built to order, I can't get over the quality of it in general.

If the picture i posted in the first page is anything to go for, it's an external battery that's as big as the laptop itself. Probably good for extended times on the road where you aren't really carrying it but is away from a powersource (i.e. in a car or bus).

the slice is a thin battery that covers the bottom side of the laptop/tablet and will typically double the battery life

another small update: Had to get more work done around the yard and stuff to start paying off whatever excess comes from the purchase, so I should(crossing fingers) order it tomorrow or thurs, with all addons (Moms not home this week to talk the techie's out of not ordering all the goodies :p ),

as for OneNote not being good on Desktops as I said, I should rephrase it, OneNote is an excellent tool, that does an exceptional job at many things(the quick note thingy is great), however for the notetaking that I was doing(specifically just bulleted stuff) it was just as good as Word(which I had used for 2.5 years on the same laptop to do it), so I saw no point in "converting".

I do however see OneNote as being more utilized with a Webcam/digitizer.....Webcam for adding in pictures in books and such(if its not terribly awkward to use), and the Digitizer because physics notes are a PITA to take in just ASCII form(though I did get pretty creative before I wised up and used that ancient tool known as a pen :p )

Again, I cant say how helpfull HP has been, even if getting to the point of finding a discount for having relatives was a bit roundabout(probably because of my hatred of calling tech support?), now that ive got the quote i'm set, and will report mid Aug(got a 3 week vacation, wanted it before then but meh cant get it till after).

as a side note, not sure how much of a delay will be happening......the site reports estimated shipdate as 7/22, IIRC when I ordered my 1521 from Dell(very few custom options), it shipped within a week, when the estimated ship date was 3 weeks after purchase.....guess it may be a bit of cover your own ass...

I think its interesting my thread has ~1750 vies....earlier today it was 1700.....just something I noticed, maybe its helping people!

A question for those tablet users, specifically the tm2. How much did you pay for yours and how much should I expect to pay? Is there a new version on the horizon in the near future?

cant say anything about the price, but yes a new version is out/coming out

currently there is a pre-configured model only, soon there will be configurable models......the only configurable ones I know of are the C2D ones

no problem

the 2740p is open to configuration how, I cant give a recommendation one way or the other, if you skimmed my thread you can see why I chose the 2740p over the tm2

namely: Better build quality, slice battery(the biggest factor over any other tablet on the market), the list goes on.....

Thanks for your updates. There are a lot of good reasons to pick the 2740 over the tm2. However the tm2 has two things in its camp. it's a good bit cheaper and it has a dedicated GPU option. If those things aren't important to you then the 2740 is the way to go.

i dont think that it wont be too much(atleast on low settings)

order will be placed tomorrow...

are there any other 2740p users in here?

hey, just found this and wanted to remark that I couldn't find the bottom mount battery being sold today. The (old) Thinkpad x41t does indeed have a "slice" battery, which is what I have.

I can't understand why they would have discontinued it by the x200 series, but here's a link to one that mine would use:

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkPad-14...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ceeec2cb8
IBM FRU: 92P1151

Looks like the HP is quite the deal if you can get them to ship it to you.
Good luck in engineering

HP markets the slice battery as a "Travel Battery", and as you said, it isnt really there for the x200 series.....I actually found out about slice batteries by looking up a different Dell(not the XT2)

Order has been placed...

Origional Pirce before tax/shipping: $2865.00......saving of $744.90(excluding tax/shipping on either side)....

Estimated shipdate: 7/25/10.....damit 1 day after I leave for vacation :( o well atleast I will have a new toy waiting for me when I return.....

compared to similar offerings, its actually not too bad....

off of "stock"(the base pre-configured), i'm paying $289, basically a bunch of "free" upgrades plus the docking station and slice battery....

that and to get a similar system from Lenovo(the only other tablet I would be interested in), would be atleast $400, but no slice battery(the $180 for that is worth it alone...double bat life, no need to carry a spare since I dont care much about weight)....

that and I need something to last for 4 years, so paying extra for buisness grade is worth it IMO (my last consumer laptop, Dell 1521, lasted 2 years before stuff started to break)

thank you heatless :p

quick question, what programs should I look at getting(other than OneNote, and the microsoft touch pack thingy) to have fun with my tablet.....i'm really hoping HP can get it out early (set to arrive end of the month), so I can have it for my long ass flight

its been delayed to ship till 8/7......o well i'm not home till after it is still schedualed to arrive anyhow......ill let ya guys know after i get it......

holy crap feather they are taking their sweet time shipping that thing to you. i just got a laptop for my new job and i already have 2 personal laptops so i've decided to wait for a good tablet to come out by the end of the year. not sure if i'll do win7 or some type of android template but i can't wait get one!

hope your machine turns up soon and you're happy with it!

damit, got another dam e-mail from HP, delayed till 9/20/2010.....i bet you can imagine how pissed I am, since I was expecting 3-4weeks(was told to me before buying), now its estimated 7-8 weeks.....god dam, atleast it hasnt been charged yet, ill be sticking with it because you cant beat the price...

part thats delayed: KMAT Omega 1.x CTO KMAT Omega 1.x CTO

i have no idea what the hell that is....i replied to the last e-mail notice from them, and said if it can be sent w/o that to send it, since I cant tell what it actually is.....anyone know? Google didnt tell me squat

bitching a company works....the nasty little e-mail complaining about twice the delay as I was told has my ship date moved up a month, to 8/16, pretty nice.....lets hope it doesnt work.

it seems the Touch Panel is in very high demand, if its the same panel as the Tm2, you guys who want a new one might appreciate that information.

small update, still reporting Aug 19 delivery date, not sure if it will stay, hope it does.....figured i'd let you guys that helped me get to a decision know that it should be here in 9 days or so...

will do, i'm out of country till the 15th, so if it arrives early, sweet :p, but i wont know till I get back lol.

supposed to ship out tomorrow according to the site, but the 16th according to the rep that contacted me back....

funny thing is, when i go to "Prod Status", it still shows it in the picking process.....as it has been for the last month(july 14)......meh lets hope its a glitch like I had on the last one, i need this dam thing for the 23rd........atleast I know i'm getting a quality product lol

Well one way or another you should have your beauty next week and I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I actually have a Libretto W100 coming next week as well as hope, nothing more like watching water boil than waiting for cool gadgets to arrive at your door step.;)

i'm hoping it gets here this week, the 19th is what it says, which gives me ~3 days to figure it all out and start using it full out the 23rd.........what kills me is that its the screen that is backordered(though it now shows it as a "partial qty".....so I assume they have it, used to be 0 for only that item)........ill know tomorrow/mon for sure......good to be back on the same day as HP support(being down under i was litterally a day ahead most of the daylight hours.)

edit: just realize which thing you said your getting, I remember when it was shown at CES and thought it would be sweet......but no tactile feedback :( i cant stand my dam iPhone keybaord(or ones on iPad's) , so something like that wouldnt do for me, would kill my 105 wpm speed....lol

The W100 does have haptic feedback, as for as touch screen keyboards go this is the best implentation I've EVER seen. Very innovative.

If you got the two day shipping you should be good. My tm2 shipped on a Friday out of China and got to North Carolina Monday morning. FexEx is the BEST international shipper no doubt.

i ordered by phone, so they didnt ask which shipping I want....Says estimated arrival is 8/19, so i'm guessing it is standard shipping. it was whatever one saved me money lol, 2.2k is enough for me....that and I would think HP gives good shipping on a late order...lol, heres for hoping
