basicly that means no 9800xt, 9800por256, or 5950ultra.

im mainly looking at 9800pro, 5900/u what do you guys think?

an no, i cant wait and save up for a 9800xt

With the launches of the next-gen parts from ATI and nVidia just around the corner, you're better off waiting, especially for that kind of money. Wait a few months, because the early word seems to be that these parts are going to be signifcantly faster than the current generation. That way, you won't be out $300 and wishing you waited for just a few months longer.

the reason i can't wait is that i dont have a pc.. and i really need one. ive been given a chance that i cant turn away form to get a new pc. no waiting till the next gen products. believe me i would if i could

Check around forums like fatwallet.com or [H]ot Deals here - there are a few deals for the 9800 Pro 128 going for under $200 right now. And I would expect to see more of them as we get closer to the release of the NV40 and R420.

Yeah, I'd go with the 215$ Radeon 9800 Pro. You can save the rest of the money for something else and it's pretty much top of the line.

9800 Pro 256 MB for 310 bucks from newegg.com is THE best bet. It comes w/ a 9800XT pcb and can be flashed to 9800XT speeds.

A 9800XT for 310 bucks aint too bad eh?

Now if only the 9800XT was an amazing new piece of hardware with new capabilities compared to the rest of the R300 line..........

wait, no, its definitely more of a bragger's right's card. But I guess its good if you want to have the highest 3DMark score.

As time passes by 256 MB on the graphics card is a welcome addition. Secondly, 9800XT for 310 bucks is not a bad idea and worth an investment if a person does not own a decent card.

9800 Pro 256 MB on a 9800XT Pcb at 310 bucks is a good deal. Just like a 9800 Pro 128 MB for 210 bucks. If he has 300 bucks to shell he should do it. If he hadn't then i wouldve suggested a 9800 Pro 128 MB

Cheap vid card now...then spend little less in a few months for better card.

Say ~20-30 now, 270-280 then. You'll still end up with a better card than if you buy now IMO.

Check out the FS section or look around pricewatch for a lowend card to tide you over.

My $.02 FWIW :)

I agree, getting an underclocked XT core for $310 may be a good idea depending on how long you want to keep the card for. Then again it might be useless in 6 months (not likely).

I agree 100%! A good example of the value of the extra memory down the stretch is the GF3's that had 128MB of memory. I have one and it still can run just everything out there with moderate settings. 256MB will pay dividends down the road if you plan to keep the card for a while.
