I'm looking to spend $100 or less on a pci express video card. I saw an 8600gt on newegg.com that falls within that price range. I'm thinking about going with that. Any recommendations?

I would stick with a x1900gt/pro or 7900gs. Both will beat out that gt by far.

if you lurk the net you might be able to get a 7950gt for ~$100. I lucked out and got one on ebay for $110 you should check there

when directx10 games become more mainstream wont i regret not having a dx10 capable card?

it will probably be a couple years before DX10 is a must for gaming so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Plus the 8600 series will struggle with most games on DX10. Just doesn't have the horsepower behind it to push dx10 to where it is worth switching the settings from dx9. Right now there are a lot of people wanting to dump their x1900/7900 series cards to upgrade to the slew of bang for the buck cards that just came out. I would take a little time and see what you can get. You should be able to snipe even a x1900xt or 7950gt as mentioned above. Both of those are awesome cards and handle dx9 to its fullest. Also as mentioned above, there won't be any dx10 exclusive games for a very long time.. I would go as far as saying 2 more generations of cards before dx10 only games start popping up.

That thing is a joke heh.

huh? Its still a great card. I had one about a year ago. Ran about everything on high/medium at the time. Still beats the hell out of a 2600xt or some other underpowered midrange dx10 card.

you know people say this so often and it's just such a fake statement. So many people on H are toally unwilling to play games at 1024 X 768 and med-low quality.

My 6600GT 128mb still plays every game I've thrown at it, up to and including bioshock. No I cant have high quality shaders, and infact yes I have to run pretty much everything at low quality, but I can still play it comfortably, and its still a damn fine game.

I'd look the numbers up on gpu review but the sites down.

I agree with that. 8600GT is no competition for the 7900GS
actually you are wrong when it comes to most newer games. UT3, STALKER, Bioshock, and Crysis for example all run much better on the 8600gt.

In Crysis the 7900gs is basically unplayable at 17fps where the 8600gt gets 30fps.

8600 gt easily beats the 7900gs in UT3.

8600gt barely beats the 7900gs in Bioshock but it is faster.

8600GT is a good choice, and would give you better AF capabilities than the 7900GS.

I'm not saying the card is bad, you show me someone who's actually received one from crucial's website.

I'd get the 8600GT. In fact I was going to upgrade my X800 XL for a 8600GT now, but since COD 4 runs so well I decided to wait until the next 9XXX card with no power connectors.
