...or maybe just above.

Working on a budget upgrade and everything is set except the hard drive. This is what I am considering, with my limited hdd knowledge 'n all.

Samsung Spinpoint T seriers HD501LJ 500GB

I would love to have a 500GB but 250 would work if its a faster, quieter, and cheaper drive. Any suggestions or is this a good bang for buck drive?

Depends what you're looking for. Too many drives have been crashing on me, and WD is second only to Maxtor IMO. Unless of course you get the Raptor, I have four of those, but they aren't in your price range. I stick with Seagate and their 5 year warranty. It is small consolation if you lose data, but you can always step up a notch for an "ES" series drive, made for higher reliability like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148155
I have 2 of the 500 GB ES drive myself, though only time will tell whether or not they actually are more reliable. They are here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148294

Remember, you can replace any other component in the PC should it fail. Once the drive dies, you've lost all that you've used your PC for. Performance + reliability = Raptor, hands down. Reliability + Space = "ES" series drive. Though, I believe other manufacturers have similar "high reliability" drives. As in all things, you get what you pay for. What is more important to you, price? Reliability? Space? Performance? Price is usually last in my list, since most drives are competitively priced anyway.
