I want to have a sound card so that I have music/game sound blasting through my speakers and then use my headset for Ventrilo, etc.

And if I decided not to go that route and just wanted a Sound Card for quality, how much better would a sound card make the sound?

If you could suggest a budget and a best of the best card that would be great. :)

On welfare with 3 kids - Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer (www.creative.com)

On welfare and sold your kids - Auzentech X-Fi Prelude (www.auzentech.com)

imo, go with prelude if the (music/ game) sound card is a long-term investment with better driver support, better compatibility, and more importantly, better sound quality

pm if any more questions

Sound cards are overall worth it though right? I'll be able to notice a big difference if I drop the 230$ on the Auzen?

Thats going to depend on what hardware and (to a lesser extent) what software your using. I don't really think your going to feel the 230 dollars for the Auzen is going to be worth it. Yes it will sound better, but not so much better that its worth the difference in price to you.
I say get the Creative product.

He uttered the 'best' word, didn't he? Probably Apogee's DA-16X with the optional Firewire card. Around $3600 for the pair. The only trouble would be integrating it with the Z-5300s -- the outputs are DSUBs. You could use an Antelope Audio Isochrone OSV-X for sync via wordclock if you really wanted to. That's another $1800.

Realistically, I'd get the generic X-Fi XtremeGamer or the old XtremeMusic. Should work just fine.

(and while he did say "best of the best card", it still falls under the "Best Sound card for this setup" umbrella :D, ok maybe I made that part up)

Hey, that gear would still be pretty good for the 5300s, don't you think? ;)
