Hi all, I need help determining the best solution for backing up the data on my pc. Currently I have about 1 TB of HD photos (30mb+ per photo x 10,000+), videos, etc. that I need to protect before I loose it due to hard drive crash, etc.
I was simply going to get an external hard drive, but noticed that none of the products available today received good reviews with about a third of them dying within a year. I don't want to continually replace the whole unit, so now I am thinking about "building"/buying a NAS.
While I've built a couple of desktops, I have no knowledge of an NAS. So, I'm here seeking advice. Here's what I would like to do:
1. Back up those photos/video's asap before I loose them! (I've had a RAID 1 configured before, but realized that would not protect me from everything).
2. I want the backup to happen automatically, incrementally, and immediately with each save. (Don't simply back up at the end of the day...a lot can happen in a few hours)
3. I want to be able to back up all of my home devices (1 pc desktop, 2 pc laptops, 1 ipad, smartphones, etc.) to this device (wirelessly for portable devices)
4. It would be nice to be able to stream my photos and videos to my DLNA flat screen (.cr2 and .mts)
5. I do not need a print server, web server, etc.
I should also add that I do have a core i7 pc and have 7 open slots in my tower, and thought about just adding a few hard drives in there, but I was thinking something external to the PC might be more protected from viruses, lightning strikes, etc.?
I have been looking at Synology with WD Red drives, but don't know which Synology I need. I have been looking at DS214+, DS214play, DS713+ and DS414. I'm looking at these because their website suggests that I need one of these more expensive units when dealing with my Hi Res photos. However, I would like to buy the least expensive model which would meet my needs. Suggestions?
