Best socket A processor?

Hey, do you guys know what the best processor I can get with a socket A motherboard? thanks

is overclockability a factor?

edit: well..crap, i'll just throw it out.. 2600+ mobile

3200+ xp?

im not really interested in overclocking.

yes, the athlon-xp 3200+

though it's not as cost effective as the overclocked mobile barton that gwai lo made mention to

Because they do not make them anymore, do you think packaged chips will go up in price or drop because of the Athalon 64. I've been putting off buying a Athalon 3200 to see. But I have a decent MB a Gigabyte GA 7N400 Pro 2 I bought when my last one went squirrely. The next time I upgrade it will be a 64 system and hopefully the tech will be tighter. :)

theres a faster athlonxp than the 3200+ :D
amd sold a limited quantity of xp cpus clocked at 2.333ghz to HP iirc, they were also labeled 3200+ :)

i'd go 2400+ Barton, 35W version. I just got mine and I can run it overclocked to 2.2ghz at 1.5v and at only one or two degrees warmer than I was running my 2500+ Barton desktop version at stock speeds, and at 1.35 volts.

2400+ 35w
2600+ 45w

and maybe 2200+ 35w.. but not in theory.. mine does what i need and for the price gave me more mhz per $$ than the other 2...

What does 35W and 45w represent? Watts?
How do you tell what is what?
I know that you can get a 2.2ghz XP 3200 with a 400 mhz bus speed.

Yeah W is watts. Generally speaking, 35W is going to run cooler than 45W. For me, I needed a cpu that ran cool b/c of limited airflow in my case (going for the quiet factor here), but if airflow and cooling isn't a problem, you might as well go 2600+ 45W and start from stock at higher speeds than the 2400+ 35W. They both have a high overhead for OC'ing.

Usually the item description will tell you 35W or 45W, like at newegg it just says 35W or 45W right up there in the item title.

I can vouch for the 2400+ mobile 35W, it's pretty sweet so far.

Stability and performance are 2 key things I am looking for. I want to do a lot 3d rendering with various programs. I am not sure OC is something I want to do. Is there a problem with the 3200 400mhz chips?

oh no, nothing wrong with them. just more bang for the buck if you got a lower spec'd chip and oc'd it. But if you can afford the 3200+ and don't want to mess around with oc'ing then by all means get it.

The 35w mobile bartons will apparently overclock to 3200+ speeds for under $90. The XP 3200+ goes for $140 @ NE.

guys, he said he wasn't interested in oc'ing... thus that kinda rules out the mobile's..

edit: typo!

haha, seriously.

Well, the 3200+ is the fastest SocketA processor. However, the 3200+ are on a 400MHz FSB, so take that into consideration if your motherboard can run it (or bios update) - and it'll need DDR400 memory to run best at stock speeds.

If you dont have a motherboard that can run 400FSB, or you do not have DDR400 memory, then the best upgrade you should get, price/performance wise, would probably be an AXP 3000+ on a 333MHz bus. - A lot cheaper.

"The 35w mobile bartons will apparently overclock to 3200+ speeds for under $90. The XP 3200+ goes for $140 @ NE."

This is a bit misleading.
XP-M 2400+ 35W 89$
Thermal Paste 4$
Fan 5-15$
Cooler 15-45$

You can end up spending less, but you could also end up spending more. Depending on how aggressive you are, you'll probably end up with around the same speed chip as the 3200+.

Also the Xp-3000 retail is 120$ if you want to save a little bit of money compared to the 3200+ (40ghz extra for 20$)

/shrug

I bought a 35w 2400+ xp-mobile, slapped a CoolerMaster Aero 7 Lite on it ($14.99 at CompUSA), put it in an Abit NF-7S, set the FSB to 200, multi to 11 and am running at 3200+ speeds at 1.5v. It idles at ~38c with the Aero 7's adjustable fan set to medium.

From what I've read this cpu should be able to do 2.4ghz on air without breaking a sweat. Haven't tried it yet, though... :)

I've got both a Mobile 2500+ and a 3200+. 3200+ is the best if you aren't going to o/c as everyone else has stated. The mobiles are better if you are willing to deal with the headache of manually setting the Motherboard settings. Let me know if you need a good deal.

no o/cing i'd take the desktop version w/the most fsb. 3000+ or 3200.
