Looking to replace the stock Intel cooling with a aftermarket one. Which do you all prefer?

On air? I love the Thermalriright XP-90c on my Northwood. An OEM S478 Prescott also works pretty well on Northys.

The regular Thermalright XP-90 (non-copper) offers the best balance between weight, size, price, and performance.

Okay I found the Thermalright XP-90 on Newegg. I went to Thermalright's webpage and they reccomend the Panasonic Panaflo 92mm fan. I couldn't find the 92mm on Newegg. Anywhere else reputable dealer where I can get the Panaflo fan? Thanks for the replies.

What kind of case you using?
If its got a 120mm exhaust you would be happy with Thermaltake's SonicTower or Fanless103. They are passive, which means no fans to fail, and no extra noise. I use one.

If you want a simple all-in-one-buy (with a fan), the Zalman 7700 or 7000 series will do just fine.

EDIT: Corrected a few names:eek:

Another vote for the Zalman series (CNPS7000B-AlCu).

Considering this is the same price as the XP-90, I'd go XP-90.

Why?

It's easy to overload a 7-series zalman, it's hard to overload a XP-90

By the way: www.jab-tech.com has the best prices

XP-120 can be a tight fit on Socket 478 boards.
Unless you really need half your board cooled, just get a XP-90.
jab-tech is a great store BTW

Mmmk...now which is the best HSF comobo if I wanted to OC a 2.4C on a decent board such as a IC7-Max3 or P4P800 (or whatever that Asus board is called).

I'd like it to be decently quiet, but not deathly so. Just no high-pitch whining Delta fans, please :p

It fits on my IC7-G too, but it's a tight fit and a lot of people have reported problems with other 478 boards.

CPU cooling performance is pretty close between them, but the XP-120 is a better choice if you're looking for:

1) Quiet cooling. Slap a Nexus 120mm Real Quiet on it, and you're good to go.
2) "Extreme" aircooling. If you're overclocking a Prescott and need all the cooling capacity you can get, you can go with a higher CFM fan.
3) You have a passive Northbridge or RAM thats getting too warm - the XP-120 is so big, the airflow covers half your motherboard.

The XP-120 will only fit on the MAX3 if you chop up the OTES, the XP-90c fits it like it was made for it.
The 90c beat the AlCu 120 in the test I linked (previous post in this thread) above. They're both nice
The copper 90 has a backing plate to keep mobo stress to a minimum, unlike the AlCu model.

Rig in my sig is not silent, but a lot quieter than those high-CFM Delta rigs.

Jeebus that thing takes a lot of space in a case, but a passively cooled P4 is impressive. Is it Prescott rated :p? . I wouldnt go anywhere near a thermaltake product for the longest time, but I'm seriously considering one of their tower coolers.

Back on topic - err, Thermalright XP90. I heard good things about the Zalman too.

Try the gigabyte 3d rocket cooler pure cooper core w/heat pipes easier to install with no clearance problems like the suggested coolers tall not wide it helps believe me it keeps my prescott p4 478 at 35c even loaded and it has a speed pot to lower sound I barely hear it though running full speed. My proc its overclocked to 3.6 from 3.0 and it runs cool and quick.

they can be found on new egg it is were I bought mine about 35 bucks. pcnerdguy
