I am thinking of getting a Dell U2412m. The only time I would ever need a second monitor is to do some trivial things like changing a song, messaging someone, or looking sometime up on the internet while the main monitor is in full screen mode during a game or watching a video. Thus I feel like the best use of my money would be getting a quality single monitor and a second hand small and cheap secondary monitor rather than getting some average quality dual 23 or 24" 1080p monitors.

The thing is I don't even know the metric I should use to judge what will be the best size for the secondary monitor should be as I don't have dual monitors and I don't know how windows manages them. It seems like the closest I can get in the vertical length of the monitor would be a 20" 4:3 which is about 12.06" high compared to about 11.76" for the U2412m. These also happen to have the same vertical resolution at 1200. However the dot pitch for these two monitors is fairly different at 0.2553 for the 20" and 0.2692 for the 24". In terms of dot pitch the best seems to be a 17" at 0.2737 however it is not as close in height at only 10.2" high.

So what would be better? The 20" or the 17" or something else that I missed. I'm in China right now and can get a used 2007fp for about $100 and a used 1708fp for about $55

I use a 17" as my side-by monitor.

Mostly because it is a samsung, has higher dot pitch, and is a stalwart fkin champion of an LCD
