I need to build a simple website for a business project,

asking for opinions on the best site for hosting.

don't really know if the business will take off or not, so I can't really say what will be down the road, but the site should be able to be upgraded for online transactions, and other retail posibilities.

If that is the limit of your requirements and you are not tied to a specific technology platform, then hit up the "Hosting Feedback" sticky in this forum. GoDaddy and Network Solutions also have decent solutions that can get you rolling with something in a short period of time.

I was looking at Go Daddy but wanted to get the opinion of someone more knowledgable than myself..

also obviously didn't see the sticky

did a search for hosting, strange the sticky didn't come up,
 
I've been using GoDaddy for quite some time now and use them for all of my web design clients. I haven't ever had a problem with them.
 
HostGator is a fairly reliable web host, and they provide very good customer support. I know a freelancer that uses HostGator for most of her clients, and I'll be launching a website soon using HostGator.

You can't go wrong with GoDaddy either though. Compare plans and rates, and see what works best for you.
 
GoDaddy is fine as long as you are doing static sites. If you try and use the ASP.Net hosting GoDaddy has you are in for extra work usually. They have a medium trust security setup for their web apps that force you to jump through a lot of hoops. I have done two client sites with them and won't do it again because their tech support is really annoying. If you are just doing basic things with say a CGI form or two then GoDaddy will suit you fine but if you get complex trying to leverage the ASP.Net Identification mechanisms you are in for extra work.

HostGator is good though and I can recommend them with no hesitation.

doh.. I saw you finally did read the sticky.
I run through a1whs.com and they are cheap for a small site (something like $20/year) and area always up.

getting some opinions from auctual users is great,

was wondering what nasty little surprises I would run into,

but I think I'll try Go Daddy, I believe I can switch down the line if the needs arise..
 
windows live is easy and free.......my site has been up for ~1.5 yrs there no issues
