So I had this great idea of using a Dell Powervault 220S from ebay for cheap. I can get a chassis for around $100 and SCA drives are dirt cheap, a buddy of mine just bought 6x Seagate 15k.7 146GB drives for around $18/ea. At this price I could have around 2TB raw for $350.

The only problem is, I don't know of any U320 cards that I expect to really be able to get the numbers I'm looking for. The only one I can think of is a PERC4e/DC (reflashed to LSI 320-2e).

For the anyone curious, this storage would be used for my home VSphere setup. More details of my build can be found here.

I wouldn't bother. Those drives run hot, and slow compared to modern drives.
 
I second the dont bother. Its cool to have, but they arent that fast and 6x 15k rpm drives arent quite. I could hear my old ones through a floor and that was with a big slow cooling fan.
 
if you have the $$ you might as well buy newer enterprise class drives from your preferred hdd company

and buy a sas card instead of scsi

hitachi: ultrastar (both sas and sata)
wd: xe or re (re also has sata in case you want to buy sata instead of sas)
seagate: constellation (both sas and sata)
 
Besides SATA took care of most of the (obvious) advantages SCSI had over IDE back in the day. But ya even though they may be 15K RPM, ~150GB for a multi-platter drive is pitiful compared to compared to the density of a current 2TB drive. The 2TB doesn't have to move the head nearly as far to get the same data.

I bet if you short strokes a 2TB drive to 147GB and benchmarked against the SCSI you'd probably be amazed at the difference.

10 years ago SCSI was still pretty awsome and I actually did what your talking about. But density and SATA protocol has fixed most of the problems.
