best SATA cables an oxymoron?

i've seen proprietary (sp?) SATA cables that feature locking mechanisms, but most standard SATA cables are VERY loose.

that "looseness" cost me some precious downtime lately (@home).

i'm scouring newegg or other places to find the best SATA cable so i can have a peace of mind.

anyone recommend any?

WD makes a proprietary one for their HDs.. it blocks the sata power port tho.

I consider it an oxymoron, unless you go proprietary, you still get stuck with overly-long/overly-short/not flexible cables :(

I don't know; standard cables always seem to lock in pretty well for me. My concern would be shielded cables.

Edit: Woot! Hardness Supreme! This is post #4096 for me.

i just checked. i believe my HDs do. i see 2 grooves for the latch. gonna try it and report back =).

i KNOW that my SATA cables were the cause of all my woes. they are so damn loose.

i have already received my SATA cables w/locking mechanism. even if the HDs aren't "compatible" or don't have the recepticles, the cables still work. Once you slide it in, it is NOT going anywhere.

my 4 HDs were very flaky and my SATA card had a hard time detecting them in their proper array with loose cables. but with these locking mechanisms, all of the HDs are ROCK SOLID. i just installed it yesterday and closed my case. i've not had any detection problems yet! this is awesome. from hereon, any SATA systems that i build4home will have to require locking mechanisms. i can't imagine a system without it!

congratulations :)

it's interesting to see people not caring about some of the most basic parts of the PCs, the connections. =). in cases like mine, it can make/break data transfer.

I'd recommend supermicro cables or cooler master cables. They actually click into place.

if they don't have a locking clip, it won't matter. eventually it'll erode&fall apart from rough hangling inside the case. the clip=best.

Whatever crack pipe you are on you need to drop. Obviously you haven't seen my machines and my lanparty servers I beat and drag to lans since the day sata came out. An no were not talking 2 or 3 drives, try 21 for one machine alone.

Maybe it's just that I have supermicro cables, but they click pretty solidly into place and probably require a pound of force or so to pull back out. I've got a bunch (I ordered 8 cables and the card came with 8  ), anyone with cable problems want to try a replacement? Probably take a while to get there given it's the Christmas season, but it should happen eventually...
