so waht is? i was looking at the denons but they are out of stock. so including shipping, what do you people think i should buy for about $250 total, including shipping
 
i got my harman kardon avr-130 for about $250 including tax and shipping. a couple other members in these forums also have the avr-130. you might wanna google it and see what reviewers say.

mostly for a new house im sharing with other people. definatly needs DDL support for my HDA card if i can ever afford to get one. looking for higher quality vs quanity of extras
 
You should have put a little more of your budget towards the speakers, and less towards the receiver. Only when you reach higher quality levels of speakers do receivers start to really become a bottleneck.

Also, ANY 5.1 receiver that has the DD logo on it support what you are after. None supports DDL, because the receiver's job is the decoding of the stream, not the encoding =]

Here's what I'd get. It's a little over your budget, but retail on this baby is 430, so you are at least saving yourself money...that's what I tell myself every time I buy something I don't need :D

Their suppsoed to be good for the money. I bought them too. They are heavy as hell for little guys. I think they were about $600 in uh... year 2000. They should be nice, they've got that weight, but they have been in a warehouse somewhere for a bit. Ah well, just got them I feel a bit better since they just have that meat. I'm shopping for a receiver too. I wasnt sure if I should spend $250 because it's not 2000 any more, like you guys said maybe too lopsided a system towards the reciever? I don't know but if the poster is using them like me... I think they are going to blow the doors off the logitech's and.. gasp... even klipsch! :eek: ... ah well... not thread jacking... I'll just watch from the sidelines.

I think I'll get the dayton sub from parts express that people seem to think highly of and I've been suggested. Hey OP what you doing about that?

So keep in mind guys if the poster is doing like me... it's not for our room with the 5k plasma.... I mean am I wrong that what we're after won't round out even an FX SLI rig in style... I don't know but I think my neighbors are going to think it's WWII when I play COD. :p Put a 2405FPW in there and my high end rig will have it's A/V portion set for a LONG time. Gaming and occasional flick or two.
 
ohh no, i had a specific thread askin about those speakers. general consensus was that they were 'good'. :p

im gonna go check worst buy today and see if they have any open box recievers. just waitin for fed ex to arrive with my new dell 1905fp. i wish they gave me a general time to wait...

it has dolbly digital, dobly prologic 2,and dts. it recommends 8 ohm speakers for use, which are the majority of speakers made, but i think its safe for 6-16 ohms
 
well thats the older version of the avr130. since the avr130 is an upgraded model at the same price, i'd go with the avr130
 
best buy has a sony STR-DE997 for like 319 and plus taht coupon makes it relativly cheap. is this a good brand/model?

no shipping and it would be in a B&M store so i can bitch at them if it dont work correctly.
 
much like another company with 4 letters in it's name :rolleyes: , the sony (at the consumer level) is MUCHO overpriced for what you get (sony, otoh, at the "pro level" makes some very fine equipment)...

you'd be better off with the h/k, imo...

note to BO(V)BZ... i NEED everything i buy... or at least that's what i tell myself... :D
 
sony is a pretty decent brand, IMO, since their products are pretty reliable and work properly, but if you do your research, you can do a bit better for the money.
 
its hard finding the right site that compares many of them with catagories that acually spread through all brands. most have their own technology and arent comparable.

Sony is in the same boat as Panasonic with receivers: low current, high voltage getting what you'd picture as a lot of watts but ends up blowing speakers and not being that high of quality. I'm speaking from experience here (Panasonic)...

VSXD914K = Basic Pioneer (not any high level stuff)
Basic Pioneer = class that these belong Sony, Panasonic, Sherwood, Technics

For that ammount of money, go Denon or Yamaha :)
 
One thing I didn't realize: according to the CNET article, it's THX certified... which means George Lucas likes it. If it's THX or isn't THX but costs more than THX stuff, then it's good...

THX certification is largely meaningless, due to the lack of any concrete list of specs describing in detail what a product requires to be THX certified. Besides, cheaper and cheaper products are getting certified, videogames are getting certified, PC speakers and speaker wire are getting certified...it's a marketing engine more than anything right now.

Lastly, Cnet doesn't exactly do the best reviews in the world. They do a good job of the 1day review, but I certainly wouldn't say that they put any real effort into it. Many amateur reviewers do better jobs than they do.
 
Point: If it's surround sound and THX, it's good. If it's THX rated 2.1, think again. If it's a THX rated movie, the sound engineering is well done.
 
the only THX thing that looks impressive to me are THX-Ultra2 compliant speakers. *drool*
 
Ultimately THX is a line where budget no longer has a meaning... THX is upper class stuff for people with money and want to spend the money to make it 100% THX certified... I thought about it for a while but an example would be my speakers are just outside of THX and that would mean I'd have to toss them so I was like okay simple sally system then... lol
 
I disagree with that. Why would George Lucas want more money? All he wanted to do was make a kind of universal design so that surround sound and video could be properly played back like he wanted them to. There is a line above THX though because there are things that he himself does use or hear of that cost a whole bunch more and are to the extreme side of paying money for surround sound (like 4 grand a set of speakers or 5 grand for a Krell 2 channel amp)

thx certification doesn't mean crap... it's "teaching to the test", just for speakers/audio gear, instead of for kids...

i don't have one piece of "thx certified" equipment in my audio racks... not one... i guarantee you you wouldn't complain after watching a movie in my living room, "gee chris, it'd be better if you had thx certified equipment in here"... :rolleyes:

:drool: i'm trying real hard to sell some stuff so i can order me a pb12-ultra... :D i am STRONGLY in need of one of those... my wife (of all people) thinks we need an pb12-ultra/2... she's nuts... i'd blow the plaster off the walls in here... plus i'd herniate myself getting the thing up the stairs! :eek:

which svs/2 model you getting rid of, and what are you getting?
 
Man, Pioneer is shit. That's about $50 more than I'd have paid for it. It'll cost the buyer $20 more than that just to ship it.

Anyhow, for a shared house, you should also look at the multizone capability. That way one of your roomies can listen to stereo sound in one room while you are listening to completely different surround sound in another.

What subwoofer are you getting?

HK is sold out of refurb AVR130's now. Try an Onkyo TR-SX601 for <$250. It has dual zone, component video switching and, if my experience with my old TR-SX500 is any indication, it'll sound pretty good. It's even rated into 6 ohm speakers.

I've got a PB12-Plus/2, which is a great sub. Watching a movie like RotK:EE or the Incredibles is a fantastic experience, but I'm of course looking for more always =] I'm not totally sure whether I'll be selling the SVS, as the replacements that I'm getting will be more for sound quality than quantity. I'm expecting them to be just as loud together, but sound a lot nicer, especially considering they come with a 4band PEQ.

Also, I wouldn't hesistate to get the PB12-Ultra/2, you wouldn't regret it. That plaster isn't too important anyways =]

EDIT: I'm getting a pair of UFW-12's from www.av123.com . They are a new product, not quite done, so I don't know any final specs, but the president of the company posted an inroom graph showing output of 112dB at 20hz for a single, and that was in a ~7000ft^3 room. My room is more like 1500ft^3, and with a pair I expect to get around 120dB@20hz, hopefully down to at least 100dB@16hz. The subs themselves are 12", massively overbuilt drivers in a 20" cube enclosure in birds eye maple and piano gloss black. The driver weighs about 30lbs, whole sub weighs 100, 1000W amp included.
 
got the dayton 10 inch one. oh well, i won my set. didnt want to spend too much money on it, and if eBay got this price, then i can sell it for a tad amount down the road if i want to upgrade.

also, im broke now :)
