best raid setup?

I read that a 3 drive raid setup can outperform a 4 drive setup due to pci bus overhead. Anybody account to that? If so, should I drop to 3 drive raptor setup?
 
If I'm not mistaken, your drives are not connected to the PCI bus; rather, they use a proprietary 266 MHz bus that is isolated from activity on the PCI bus. I wouldn't put too much faith in that claim.
