I'm putting together a WC system and I have everything but the rad figured out. What would you guys recommend as the best rad on the market ... not heatercore wise? Thxs

mm i mean commercial watercooling radiators, such as D-Tek Procore, or Black Ice Extreme ... etc.

well look at reviews but if those are single 120mm fan rads the chevett heter core is 20 dollars...and is as good

Well those are both based off heatercores...

Hehe....Usually you can get a straight answer quicker round here. I think the best rad is the black ice extreme II. It is huge though!

The "best" radiator is a very subjective thing. It really depends on what you are looking for.

Since you have asked for a non-heatercore, here are some great radiators:

Black Ice Xtreme (single or dual).
http://www.hwlabs.com/products/index.htm
They fit 120mm fans and have 1/2 OD barbs. For the best in this line (assuming you have space to put it) is the Xtreme II with two 120mm fans. Great quality and great cooling to boot.

Thermochill radiators are considered top of the line as far as computer watercooling goes (and you pay for it too .)
http://www.thermochill.com
I would look at the HE120.1 or even better (if you have space) the 120.2. The 120.3 is really overkill for most computer applications.

Those are what I would consider top notch as far as non-heatercore radiators go. If you want to get a heatercore (cheaper, higher flowrates and cool almost as well) check out the Dtek procore with shroud and the Dangerden single or dual heatercore and shroud. Those already have the right barbs installed so you dont have to worry about that.

Good luck, I hope this helps narrow down your search.

ok if I were to get a heatercore, where would I get one, and what modifications are necessary to the barbs?

Just go to AutoZone. You can braze the barbs on yourself or have a radiator shop do it for you. Usually you can get the guy at a shop to do it for a six pack;)

I love how the poor guy asks for non-heatercore advice and everyone gives heatercore advice.

/me prepares for flaming

You can get decent heatercores from both dangerden www.dangerden.com and Dtek www.dtekcustoms.com that already have barbs attached so you dont have to worry about that. I would suggest that route if you want a high-flow, somewhat finished looking decent heatercore.

You can also get good heatercore at your local autoparts dealer. Look for ones with 1/2 inlets and outlets already, and if not, you can always buy barbs from home depot and solder/braze them on.

For the best looks and the best cooling, I would still suggest getting a thermochill or Black Ice radiator. They are polished/finished nicely, have mounting holes for 120mm fans, nice barbs, and they cool water really well.

BIX 2 with 4 120mm fans keep in mind this pic was before I added the cascade with lowered my temps to ambient or 1 deg over

heh Mysogonist, i'm not poor, just misguided :)

And besides if these ppl can convince me to get a heatercore, then sure, just I dont have the time, skills or confidence in my ability at modifying them myself (i'd be rather concened about water flowing through my expensive ELECTRONIC computer through barbs that I soldered myself)

Also, I would NEVER get a koolance, or ANY other watercooling kit for that matter, I intend on doing this from scratch, with the best parts I can find ... If anyone is interested, this is what i've decided on ...

White Water CPU Block
Eheim 1250
DD Z-Chip Chipset Block
DD Geforce4 and Radeon 9000/9700 Pro Water-block

Havnt decided on if i'm gonna get a bayres or not yet, i'm just looking at the dimensions of free space in this case as we speak (Lian Li PC61)

Pffft .. just buy a car radiator. I got both a heatercore (holds 4 120mm's) and a radiator (holds *8* 120mm's) and they both (together) cost less then the market-branded stuff.

I just bought a great looking dual 120mm raidiator off of some guy on the forums for $35 shipped without barbs, although he does sell them for $40 with barbs. It has a great looking paintjob too. I recommend them, they are absolutely beautiful.

Spidey I have limited space :)

As I just figured out, I have 30x14.8x15.4(cM) in the top of my case to house the rad (and to exaust out of a top exaust hole) .... I cant mount the rad at the bottom front, because at the moment that area is occupied with a drive bay holding 4 120gB HDs. I have yet to figure where i'll put the pump too. and killernoodle, what is his name?

whatever happened to that crazy-bad@$$ mirror-looking $250 F1 rad from south africa or some other such place. anyone else remember those?

can't find the damn link....

other than that, the lytrons are sw33t. I have a dual 115v copper finned and Stainless housing lytron around here somewhere. :D

You'll want it as intake because you always want the coolest air to blow on your heatercore or radiator. Why don't you get a Danner Mag 3 or Swiftech MCP600 instead of an Eheim 1250? IHMO, those two are better than the Eheim.

Cathar stopped selling Cascades and Dtek stopped selling Pro Cores right?

cascades aren't being sold no, trust me I looked, I wanted one so bad, thats why I have to settle for a WW. As for procore's i've seen em listed some places, but as out of stock, so im not sure.

this one?

have one of these in my main system. works damn near passive, it's so effecient:eek:

inside of a heatercore looks like this:
toplesscorereszd.jpg

multiple flat channels for waterflow that keep pressure drop to a minimum while greatly increasing the surface area for contact between the water and the metal. they are generally much more efficient than tubed rads.

nice work on the side plates. did you go with the brass ones from online metals or the weld steel from the local hardware store?

also - nice use of the threaded female fittings. those work great for swapping out fittings - I used those on the 1st chevette core I made after adding some short extensions to the tubes:
arsglcore.jpg

side note on the chevette cores - autozone bumped up the price ($27 was the quote I got a few days ago -- too high for a bare core) and they no longer keep them as in-store stocked items (Bastages!!!). Time to find a new one for single 120mm fans....on the bright side, I think I have already found it....more pics coming soon. :D

oooh i see
so what is a koolance heat exchanger, a rad, or a heatercore?
by the way the heatercore is more efficent right?? is there a disadvantage to using one? is it more expensive than rads?

heatercores are usually much less than rads.

disadvantages....can't really think of any other than they might take a little work to covert over to computer cooling purposes....but I usually classify that in the fun category side of things.

if i where you and you want good cooling and good looking i would go for aqua computers airplex 360 its a rad for 3 12 cm fans.
airplex 360
it comes in smaller versions though....:)

there are several on the forums that sell heatercores already converted over for use in a watercooling loop.... h311, if I dont stop playing with these things for the fun of it, I am gonna have to start selling them. :D

other companies like www.dtekcustoms.com sell them -- their procore and jr procore are both converted heatercores.
