i'm going to be building a conroe rig next month, and i havent been following power supplies since i built my althon rig. i want the best this time. again, lol.

i dont really care about price, but i do want to stay away from PCP&C, just cause i see no need to spend that much on a power supply.

thanks

Look at offerings from Seasonic, Antec, Enermax, and FSP Group, among others.

Those are good brands. Read the stickys atop this forum. Also your real key is the 12v line. At minimum you'll want dual 12v. Many PSU's have 3 or even 4 12v lines. If you want a SLI/Crossfire set-up factor that in as well. 500w total and 32A on the 12v's are decent starting points for a high end system

Seasonic's M12 series seems worth waiting for... otherwise Corsair has a preview of it already.

What videocard are you putting in the new build? Look at Enhance, FSP, Enermax, and Seasonic, they tend to be some of the best. Zippy/Emacs, LiteOn, Topower, Seventeam and some others are really good also.

Zippy/Emacs then...hands down.

probably just a 7900gt.

i'm not looking for huge power cause i need it, i'm looking for it, so my rig runs smoother and cooler. (500w @ 350draw>380w @ 350draw, so on and so forth)

are zippy/emac the actual brand (off the top of my head, i would say no, lol)

thanks for all the info guys

Best: FSP, OCZ (Gamexstreams), Modstream, Seasonic S12, M12 (when it comes out), xclio, Power PC&C

Very Good: Antec, Enermax, TT Toughpower Series

Enermax is better then XClio. You could put Topower in the Very good section and Seventeam in the Best section, probably Enhance in the Best section also.

Enermax Galaxy 1KW

looks cool, modular, and $100 less then the PCP&C 1kw

Its probably overkill, but hey, its one of those things, you just gotta have one :D

OCZ's powerstream is decent. The Modstream isn't too hot (better for the price available), and the GameXstream is a good supply.

IT really depends who makes the supply. I'd personally go with the corsair HX620,

Also gotta watch out for too much brand loyalty. For instance, some people love Mushkin's memory however the reviews of their new PSU's have been less than stellar especially with respect to their 12v lines. Just because someone is good or even very good at something does not mean they are very good at everything

does the same apply to modular supplies?

Neither the Topower based Powerstream or Msdstream or the FSP based GameXtream is nearly as good as Zippy/Emacs, Estassis, Win-Tact, Seventeam

the silverstone psu's have always impressed me. their 750W and 850W versions should suit you fine. these are etasis built units.

Why is it that everyone always forgets about Silverstone? I think you are the first person in this thread to mention it. Are they not that good? Cus I am looking to get one probably the 750 watt but I want to make sure they are good PSU's. Are they? Also I apologize if this is a thread jack. I did not intend for it to be.

Because ignorance is bliss.

Because the question was "Best PSU out there." Yet the thread is littered with references to "Antec" and "OCZ" and... heaven forbid... "X-clio."

Reference answer to question #1: Ignorance is bliss.

They're AWESOME. But are they the "best?" Since "best" is very subjective, it's a question that can't be answered. Best for the money? Perhaps. Most "better" power supplies cost more.

It's a thread jack and you will be fined 2,000 Bohemian Joachimsthalers!!
