Best PS for Antec P180 ???

My PS just died and I need to replace it. Since the support for the one I have (Sun Beam Tech) sucks I want to go with another brand. I would like something modular and at least 550 W. I'm not doing SLI but I have 6 HD's. Since the Antec P180 has the PS mounted on the bottom, I'll need longer cables.

Any suggestions for a (very) quiet, reliable Power Supply?

Thanks,

Steve

Thinking more about it... I think a non-modular PS would be best because of the tight fit behind the PS with the fan that comes with the P180. The connectors on the modular PS's put a lot of strain on the cables when they turn upward towards the middle of the case.

Specs
ASUS A8N SLI Premium
AMD 64 x2 4400
2 gig RAM - 2x1gig sticks
ATI 1800xt
ATI TV WONDER Elite
5 WD 250 GB HD's
2 DVD-Writers

Currently am running an enermax 460 in my p180. It does its job pretty good but since am pretty overclocked I plan on switching to something a lil stronger.

A good 400W-450W would be able to handle that for sure.

The Seasonic S12-430 is one of the quietest PSUs (rivaled mainly by its larger siblings) available.
With five drives and an X1800XT, 14A on +12V1 may not be enough, imo.

Not to mention that the Seasonic has woefully short cables. Trust me I have one in my P180. The thing is very quiet and I love that but the main ATX cable can barely reach.

An X1800XT uses around 8-9A, while HDs use around 0.5A (check manuf specs to be sure).

Besides, the ATX spec allows for an allowable 20A per rail - it might just be that Seasonic rated their rails in such a way that you could just add up the nominal max per rail to arrive at the combined max.

The new revisions (with sleeved cables) have longer cables for cases like the P180.

I have the same case and a enermax liberty 500w. Its a good PSU but the fan location isn't the best for the antec P180. A PSU with a rear fan would have the best air flow in that case, but its not that big of a deal.

seasonic or the antec phantom... no fans at all, and makes good use of that fan infrom of the psu..

Actually, both have fans. Seasonic fans are quiet since the psu is high efficiency, and antec phantom fans don't spin until you reach a certain temperature, at which point they spin like crazy. Add to that the fact that antec uses fuhjyyu capacitors, and you have a pretty easy choice.

Seasonic.

Seasonic released new revisions on their S12 series. they all come with sleeved cables rather then twisted and also lengthened their cables.

If a PS has a bottom fan (in a normal orientation, top of case, draw air from cpu/graphics card area), is if ok to flip them over so that when installed in an Antec P180 the fan is facing up? I would assume you would NOT want to block a fan port on a PS....

Hard drives use more then .5A when they boot, and that is assuming their is no RAID array.

And how much does the video card use during bootup? CPU?

Having built several systems around the P-180...

Yup, mounting the PSU in whatever orientation is generally no problem. Although in the P180 the PSU mount is on a raised platform so the clearence below is pretty much the same as the clearence above. I don't think it makes much difference which orientation you choose.

My current rig has the OCZ Powerstream 600w in the P180. FYI the 600w Powerstream is significantly longer than the lower two models in the range. Fitting this in my case was an absolute horror show. I had to shave the High throuput antec fan and remount it without the mounting bracket to free up an extra 1/4 inch or so. You definately want to be careful there. On that note the Seasonic s12-600w fits like a dream, though its true that the cables barely reach.

The new OCZ Gamextreem PSUs have much smaller and lighter and will fit better, though I don't know if they are as good as the powerstreams.

hope this helps.

I am taking a liking to the SilverStone Strider ST60F for my Antec P180, though it is a bit longer and I need to physically measure the space available in the P180 to make sure it will fit. It is modular and has longer cabling for the longer cable runs and hopefully to allow putting the cables behind the motherboard for a nicer look.

Any comments on the ST60F for a P180?

You'll probably have to remove the lower 120mm fan, as that PSU is much longer than average.
