I'm in the market for a new display and was looking at the higher end LCD flat panel (vp201 2001 FP, that HP 23"") and I have to say that for close to around the same price, a projector can be had.

Does anyone have any opinions on using a projector for big screen gaming? What are some good projectors out there and what features should I pay the most attention to? Granted the res isn't that high - the most I have seen a projector be is 1024x768, but I think playing HL2 or Doom3 at 50"+ would be pretty sweet.
 
Yeah it is.

Make sure you look for the highest posible lumens, more the lumens the brighter your display will be in day light conditions.
 
if your going to do projector gaming you should forget about what it looks like in the daylight in my opinion. Projectors are meant for people that are going to consider light control. If you can't get your gaming room fairly dark a projector probably isn't for you. Your probably shouldn't put much stock into lumen ratings either. Just like power supply wattage ratings manufacturers fudge lumen ratings quite a bit. Some projectors to look at would be the Benq 6200 (which is quite bright after saying all of that) and the Infocus X1 (only 800x600 but I've heard its beutiful looking). www.projectorcentral.com and www.avsforum.com are good places to start. Those links may be a bit off so you may have to google for them. I'm in a hurry right now but I'll double check them when I get back from work.
 
runco, sony, NEC, make good ones, da-lite screens are very good.

i've played unreal on a infocus hd projector and it was sick. almost gave me motion sickness.
 
I have an x1 and think its a great place to start. If you have a little extra you should check out the screenplay 4085. Its 16x9 though. That may be a problem. You will probably want to stay away from LCD. The black levels are not very good. Also you have to have a dark room no matter how bright the projector is. Your black is only going to be as black as the screen is. So in a light room that you can see the screen your blacks are only going to be that dark. That would be a problem for games like doom 3 that are very dark. Also LCDs have very visible pixels. DLP give a much smoother image and has deeper blacks. Also someone mentioned sickness. I have a 100 inch sceen and I cant play games on it without getting dizzy. So I just stick with my monitor.
