Best place for a sub?

My sub makes walls and some things rumble which destroys the purity of sound.
any tips on best place to put a sub or maybe putting some kind of shock absorbant under it?
 
First question is, what type of sub or what brand is it? Next question does it have a port? You can't really make a sub less loud or reduce the amount of bass by putting somthing under it. But if it is close to a wall move it further away, if the port is facing the wall, turn it another direction, if it has a gain control on it, turn it down. These are some of the things that will make a difference.
 
no, look i want nice sound coming from sub, i do want to turn it up but reason that i don't is because it shakes the items nearby. the from of the speaker is facing me... will putting books make it stop shaking the walls.
 
i have the same problem. i live in an army baracks and got logitech z-5500. its under my "entertainment center" and rattles it like crazy. sucks that i cant just throw the shitty "entertainment center" away, seeing as the army would probably charge me $10000 for it. when im in the mood to shake my room i just jam my foot between the desk and the sub and it stops most the rattling.
 
That's the thing, turning it up will only make it worse, that's the whole point of bass, it's low frequency, resonance is easier to produce with low note, meaning object vibrate easier with low frequency, so the louder you turn it up, the more things will vibrate. If you want it louder with less chance of objects vibrating around you, you need to move them, or find some way to secure them in place.
 
Granted things vibrating doesn't help sound quality, but there isn't much you can do about, except keep the items from vibrating.
 
But like I said, try moving it away from the wall, or face it into the most open space, that may work.
