It all depends on what you want to spend. You can get upwards of $1000 for some of these devices. My wife swears by the Wacom Graphire tablets for her graphic design. She uses the 6x8 tablet.
I say first figure out how much you are willing to spend then start looking at the Wacom tablets. I'm sure there are other good manufacturers out there too but I don't know of any else.
