Best PCI card

My father in law has a HP cheapo computer and all he has is PCI slots. We play a lot of Wolfenstien ET and he wants a new video card. (He gets like 10FPS now) What would you suggest for a PCI card?? It doesn't have to be great just good enough to play Quake3 engine games.

It should run fine w/ that card then, maybe want to go up to 512mb of ram but on the quake3 engine I don't think it really matters.

I have an nForce2 board w/integreated Geforce 4 MX, and Wolfenstien ET runs fine (Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB DDR).

The FX series of cards sucked especially the 5200, isn't the mx440 faster in most cases?

It didn't suck quite as much as you think.

Refer to THG VGA Charts: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-03.html#unreal_tournament_2003

The FX 5600 is definitely faster than the MX 440. It makes sense considering that the MX 440 was a low end part from the GeForce 4 series while the FX 5600 was a mid range part (meant to compete with the 9500 prior to the FX 5700) in the GeForce FX series which was the following generation.

I believe that in a couple games the 9200 or the MX 440 may be able to catch up to or slightly surpass the FX 5600's performance. But on average you will find that the FX 5600 is quite a bit faster in most games.

don't forget that the gf4mx series has no shaders whatsoever, it is just an overclocked geforce 2

Is it an overclocked GeForce 2 or GeForce 2 MX? I forget.

Oh I thought you were talking about a 5200 not a 5600. Yeah a 5600 is >>> mx440. Ian964 how much are you willing to spend?

do they still sell 9100pcis?

those are the best pci cards you can get i believe

The FX 5600 will still be faster. Remember that the 9100 a.k.a. 8500 was released to compete with the GeForce 3 whereas the FX 5600 was released to compete with the 9500.

RTCW:
FX 5600 - 185.1
8500 128 - 123.6

Wasn't there a PCI 5700?

I don't believe the 5700 ever made the jump to PCI. There probably wasn't a need with the 5200 and 5600 holding down the PCI fort and with PCI-Express on the horizon. Anyone without an AGP slot probably wouldn't drop the $ for a 5700 PCI anyways or see much benefit with the slow speed of the PCI bus.

Yeah, my post was refering to an error on the order page that said the card had a 5200 GPU when it was clearly a 5600 card. I changed "it's pretty clearly not a 5200 on the box" to "it's pretty clearly a 5600 on the box" to avoid further confusion. :)

Anyways, get the 5600 especially if you won't be buying a brand new PC any time soon. It will be money well spent since it will see you through gaming longer than a 5200 / 9100 / 440 / 9200 would.

I'd want the programmable pixel and vertex shaders of the FX series.

They did not make a PCI version of either the GF3 or GF4 series. The GF4MX PCI is a optimized GF2.
It is a great chipset, as the Geforce2 has, or did, last longer than ANY card around. People still use them today, Nvidia had to rebadge them though to make them appear fresh.

The 5200 or 5600 should be much better though as they have programmable VS/PS, which are used in many games you will play.
Some would say "its not fast enough to run games with lots of shading", but it is.

The 5200 was about equivalent to a Geforce3. It got a bad rap from the "macho" 3D crowd, but they are idiots. Geforce3s were fast cards, about like a GF2 Ultra after driver revisions.

Its actually a nice DX9 budget card, wheras ATI never produced a DX9 budget card.
At least you'll have DX9... its not like you cant turn the features off.

I'd personally suggest picking up the 5600 if you are using a nice 2ghz machine..
if you dont want to spend that much, 5200.

GF4MX for those who really dont care at all, its a great and cheap card to keep laying around for a backup even when you buy a machine with AGP or PCX. But with the 5200 being around it makes little sense, drop a measly $60 on a 5200, at least.

Take a look at the OCP Doom3 hardware guide, the 5200 (as well as 5600), does quite well considering its the only card in its price range and the only PCI cards with DX9 capability.
It has all the latest Nvidia technology from the FX series, including UltraShadow1, which DOES make a difference in games like Splinter Cell and Doom3.

Its also the only card you can buy that will let you see all the special effects of Doom3, like heat haze.

OK, this is an old post - but I wanted to see what you guys thought now that a year has passed.

Stuck with a business computer, Dell Optiplex GX280 with a PCI-Epress (low profile) port.

Here's the problem - do I get the PCI FX5700LE for $60 (refurb is fine with me) at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814140041R,

Or, do I continue to try and get a Dell x300 PCI-Express card (weak card, about $100 from Dell with the required dual port VGA dongle to do dual mon - onboard cuts off when PCI-E is active).

HERE'S THE PROBLEM:
The PCI-E port on the mobo is only a half-height slot (low-profile) (PCI ports are full size, so no problem there), and I can not use a full height card because that would draw attention to the case being open (work computer). Also, I need to be able to do dual monitor support, and the PCI-Express and onboard Intel Extreme graphics won't work at the same time.

So, I am thinking about getting this $60 card and using it to game on (when slow in the office) and using the onboard to keep an eye on my calendar and mail.

Any ideas on whether or not there is a better PCI deal out there? Maybe play CS:S or W:ET.

TIA,
PixelFreak
