Best optimized games list for the PC

That's true but more recently Capcom has increased the quality of their PC ports greatly.

Really? Resident Evil 4 would beg to differ with you. A shitty PC port of a shitty PS2 port of a Gamecube game.

I wasn't refering to RE4. RE4 was garbage but that's pretty much the last shit game they released. Most of the newer ones like Lost Planet Colonies and DMC4 were very good and I'd imagine SF4 and RE5 will be the same.

Yeah DMC4 was an excellent port, that's how it should be done.

that is so not true..

Yeah it is! It looks great and runs great on all kinds of hardware. The source engine is not the best looking around anymore, but it still looks great and runs better than great for how awesome it looks!

Was surprised myself, too bad being a good port didnt make up for the fact that the game sucked horribly.

You take that back!! [rage] ;)

I'd say Q3 engine, it can run on pretty much any PC and even after all these years it still looks acceptable on modern machines.

People who bang on at Capcom about how bad the RE4 and DMC3 ports were need to check the facts. Capcom didn't actually port them; Ubisoft did. Blame Ubi.

Yea but it was SO cpu dependent, i remember guys with P3s at 800mhz + geforce 3 moaning about perfomance in SoF2/mohaa on maxed settings at 800x600, while 1.4ghz+ AMD users had no problems at all when coupled with a gf3 ti200 or even gf2 gts :p

Especially detailed outdoors ( like the infamous swamp level in jedi outcast ) were framerate killers back in the day.

Doom 3 and its derivatives win IMO.

That game looked great when it was released, it still looks great. I played it on a stinkin geforce 4 MX 420 (rebadged geforce 2) and it looked good / ran well. Then I played it on a 9800pro and it looked great. Played it on a 7600GT and it looked even better. Bet I could play it now on my 4850 and it will still look good by todays standards.

That is optimized. Looks good and runs well on the worst video cards and looks awesome on the best video cards. That is time and work put into making a good game engine!

For it to run smoothly you have to lower its graphics to a point where it looks like crap. By the time you're getting 40+fps on most mid range systems, textures look muddy, you've had to turn down shaders so everything looks flat and plain, the distant textures look like a murky bowl of soup (similar to Oblivion before texture mods), and pop-in is horrible and extremely noticable. Even when you're stationary you can see the pop in bubbles.

I had to run Crysis for a long time at 800x600 with medium settings at ~15fps and thought it looked fantastic. It didn't look like the screenshots people were posting, but then again the haters were trying very hard to say that Crysis was on the same level graphically as Far Cry, no matter how many side-by-side comparisons showed different. Hell, people were still saying it a couple of months back when that deer hunting game was discussed. Now I can run it at max. settings (sans AA) and it still looks great.

IMO it comes down to perception and e-peen envy. With that said, I'll call Crysis a 'well optimized' game. [edit] Excluding DX10 mode when combined with the 64-bit exe (or vice versa--leave either out of the equation and it scales well and handles AA without killing your PC.)

CoD 4 was seriously well optimised. Looked good and run very nicely on a mid range PC. On the other end of the scale GTA IV would win the booby prize

Surely the original Unreal Tournament has to take the crown.

Ran great on everything, and if you didn't have a dedicated graphics card, you could just run it in software mode which actually ran alright and looked alright.

And it still plays well to this day and looks ok to this day. Detail added only where it is needed.

Doom3 fails hard because it had stupidly detailed enemies which you never really got to see since they were either; 1) In the dark and so too dark to see. 2) Behind a muzzle flash getting shot, or 3) Disintegrating having just been shot.

Kinda like a Quark, you couldn't see the detail of Doom3's enemies, you could only infer it by the framerate drop.

Croteam understood this perfectly with Serious Sam and made the enemies as simple as possible so that they didn't bring down framerates and you could have TONS of them on screen which is WAY more fun than a few high detailed enemies.

I played it at 1400x900 on mostly medium and some high settings and it ran at 20ish fps and I thought it looked average at best, ugly at worst, and was far from smooth :p I felt then and still feel now that COD4 maxed out at 1680x1050 with a bit of AA looked better than the original Crysis on medium at a lower resolution, yet COD4 still performed better. Sure, crysis' grass and plants jiggled around which may have taken more power, but to me all it did was highlight jaggies and for the most part didn't look realistic anyway, so I say having stationary plants is better "optimisation".
